Weekend match report.

Last weekend saw a couple of the team and their dads head to North Wales. We wanted to practice our light line fishing ahead of Italy and learn any tips the local and travelling match anglers were prepared to share!

Saturday - Jimmy Price match - Pwllheli.

Avert a recent match saw lots of bream caught, the plan was to predominantly fish for these. After an hour into the match, it was clear for most pegs that they weren’t there in numbers with odd fish being caught. Jamie, Max and I all had one on our card but it was slow. 2.5 hours into the match, a garfish was caught. Jamie and I quickly switched tactics. Jamie caught 2 in quick succession. I caught one and lost one (lessons learnt). Max was a cast behind and missed the shoal. They vanished as quickly as they came.

Jamie switched tactics and managed to catch a schoolie to add to his card. Max and I stuck on the garfish but didn’t catch anymore.

Total - Jamie - 2 x gars, 1 x bass, 1 x bream
Max - 1 x bream
Me - 1 x bream, 1 x gar

Results - Jamie did brilliantly and won the zone with the continental system - a phenomenal result for a junior against a field of brilliant anglers. (I was 5th)

Sunday - Three Herrings Open - Pwllheli

Back on the same venue but a slightly different area. After an evening of tying/adjusting lots of garfish rigs, hopes were high!

Sunday had a minimum size limit of 15cm (there was no limit Saturday). Max had a frustrating first hour catching a Corkwing and Goby undersized. Jamie had a schoolie on the card and I’d managed a couple of bream and a corkwing. (Frustratingly having my main line cut with fish on the first cast too 🤦🏻‍♂️)

There was the odd gar in our area spotted surfacing, tactics quickly switched for ourselves and adjacent anglers, but they just weren’t interested in our bait.

Max persisted for the bream and eventually caught one and another undersized Corkwing. Jamie further up the beach switched tactics to see if he could catch anymore schoolies, successfully catching 2 more and a lovely 31cm flounder (there was a longest flatfish pool).

I managed to card 5 fish and had 2 corkwing wrasse undersized.

Total - Jamie - 3 x bass, 1 x flounder
Max - 1 x bream (1 x goby, 2 x corkwings under)
Me - 3 x bream, 2 x corkwings (2 x corkwings under)

Results - Jamie had another great day. He won the juniors and tied for longest flatfish, splitting the prize money. Max secured 2nd junior. (I think I was either 3rd or 4th in the zone)

We had a brilliant weekend and the matches were perfect to trial the light rigs and tactics needed for the Worlds. Thanks Jimmy & Tony for organising. Thanks to everyone who made us all feel very welcome and gave up some of their time to interact and share some tips with the lads.
