Last week, Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) and AMI Member, talked Tom through the basics of placing cams. This week she guides him through the key things to know when it comes to placing nuts.

There's plenty more to learn about nuts, and how to place them safely, but here are a few really useful tips!

To learn more about nuts and using them in your climbing, we strongly recommend getting hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor or an experienced, competent climber.

The Puma strikes all year round.

Built to adapt to every season, the Puma fits over any layering system thanks to fully adjustable waist and leg loops and a floating waist belt. Four gear loops carry dedicated ice protection for winter routes, while offering extensive racking options for summer climbing. Generous padding provides lumbar support, and mesh fabric keeps things breathable when it's hot.

The loops are positioned to keep gear accessible and prevent it bunching up, no matter how much you're carrying.

Sweaty summer climbing or epic winter mountaineering, the Puma has your back either way. Click the link below to get yours:

It's time to cover some cam-placement basics.

With Tom kicking off a multi-pitch route, Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) and AMI Member is there to coach him through some improvements to his cam placements. There's plenty more to learn about cams, and how to place them safely, but here are a few really useful tips!

As always, we strongly recommend getting hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor or an experienced, competent climber, and practising thoroughly in a safe, controlled environment.

Trad Talks Continue - How to Belay with Half Ropes.

Erin is getting ready to belay Tom, who is about to lead a multipitch trad climb at the crag, using half ropes. Alice, a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI), is on hand to teach Erin how to belay using half ropes on the route theyโ€™re about to climb.

Before using a new technique we strongly recommend seeking hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor or a competent climber, and practising thoroughly in a safe, controlled environment before heading out on route. Whatever your experience level, always carry out a thorough buddy check with your partner to confirm the whole system is correctly set up before anyone leaves the ground.

When climbing multi-pitch routes, efficient rope management becomes increasingly important, especially when setting up and belaying from a hanging stance.
Lap coils provide a simple way to keep excess rope organised and close at hand, without creating unnecessary tangles. In this clip from Mountain Skills Onlineโ€™s Trad Climbing course, IFMGA guide Dave Rudkin talks us through the process of lap coiling and how it can be used at the belay.

Grab your Classic rope bag and hit the wall or crag.

Built to fit an 80m rope with room to spare for extra gear, it converts from rucksack to courier bag thanks to detachable straps. A removable tarp keeps your rope clean and protected, with tie-in points to keep it tangle-free.
Compression straps hold your load steady and centered for better balance and comfort on approaches. They can also secure equipment like axes or walking poles without taking up valuable internal bag space.
