Friday focus…long, stalky grass!

I keep hearing again lately, that long grass is the better option for pasture turnout…but not necessarily!! It may be for the types that struggle to maintain weight and need plenty of grass, but, not so much for the good doing types!

There is always lots of debate over whether long stalky grass or short, or overgrazed grass is better or safer for good doing horses and ponies.
Long stalky grass may have a lower calorie and sugar percentage and be more fiberous per kilo than short grass, but, they will be consuming much more of it! So this would not be ideal for a horse prone to weight gain, an already overweight horse or one that is prone to laminitis or has an existing condition that needs to ensure their calorie and/or WSC intake needs restricting!

As with many parts of the equine diet, percentages on a feed bag, or snippets of information such as longer grass being more fiberous and lower in sugars etc than short grass per kilo are what is taken into account, rather than how much is being fed/eaten and what this contributes to the overall diet.

They can consume far more longer grass in a grazing bout, so they will be getting far more calories, sugars and fructan per kg than with shorter grass. The focus frequently seems to be on the length of the grass rather than how much can be eaten! So if you are grazing your good doing horse or pony on longer grass and you are worried about weight gain or WSC intake, then the grass should be restricted however suits you and your horse best.
