Last Tuesday some of our club members set off at 4:00AM on a nearly 3 hour drive to Porthdinllaen, North Wales, to aid and North Wales Wildlife Trust in their annual Seagrass Seed Collection! 🌱🌿
Sadly all the hot weather the UK has had at the moment did not hold up this time, with strong winds and rain - however we persisted! Following a short briefing on health and safety and how to identify and pick seagrass seeds safely, we were straight in to the sea with fins and snorkels, hunting through what felt like miles of seagrass around the bay - or what some may call an Octopus’s Garden! 🐙🤿
Though the vis was terrible, it was great to see the wonder of these hidden heroes of carbon capture - and it is even better knowing that LUSAC have contributed to it’s conservation.
Following the seed collection, we also had a quick afternoon dive at Porth Ysgaden, where the vis was much nicer, seeing lots of Spider Crabs, Ballan Wrasse and Tompot blennies! 🦀
Thank you to Project Seagrass for setting up this event and we look forward to working with more seagrass in the near future! 💚💙
