𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 🏹🏋️

Sport Lisburn & Castlereagh has recognised two local athletes for outstanding achievements in May and June.

May’s winner is archer Helen McCormick. Helen excelled in the Muckamore Company of Archers Summer Series WA720 and Mixed Team Head-to-Head competition. The Northern Ireland-level event attracted archers from clubs across the province and offered a high standard of regional competition under World Archery rules. Helen won gold in both the WA720 and Mixed Team Head-to-Head events. She is also ranked second overall in the Summer Series standings reflecting her sustained excellence throughout the series. Helen's achievements highlight her dedication, commitment to training, and ability to perform under pressure. Her success is a testament to her commitment to the sport and has brought great credit to both her club, Lisburn City Archery.

June’s winner is powerlifter Simon Luke. Simon proudly represented Team Ireland at the WPC/AWPC European Championships in Powerlifting and Single-Lift Bench Press and Deadlift, held in Limerick. In the lead-up to the competition, Simon showed exceptional discipline, commitment and resilience through a demanding training programme. His hard work paid off with an outstanding international performance. Simon achieved a 195kg squat, a 135kg bench press and a 250kg deadlift. His bench press and deadlift both set new Irish National Records for his age and weight category. These achievements saw Simon crowned M2 110kg European Champion and awarded a well-deserved gold medal. Simon’s hard work, consistency and elite-level are a testament to his dedication to the sport and his commitment to achieving excellence.

Local children have enjoyed a jam-packed summer of activities after taking part in the popular 'Summer in the City' programme.

Organised by the council’s Sports Services Unit, the annual programme provided almost 2,000 places across seven facilities in Lisburn & Castlereagh.

Summer in the City also offered an extensive choice of Summer Sports Camps to allow children to try a new sport and get everyone moving throughout the school holidays.

Councillor Sharon Lowry, Chair of the Communities & Wellbeing Committee visited the summer activity schemes at Dundonald Ice Bowl and Lagan Valley LeisurePlex as well as the multi-sports camp at Ballybeen Sports Hub.

Councillor Lowry added, “The 2026 ‘Summer in the City’ programme reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting local families and creating opportunities for people of all ages to come together and enjoy everything our council area has to offer.

I was delighted to visit some of our summer activity schemes and see first-hand the excitement and energy they bring. The enthusiasm of the children, alongside the fantastic work of our staff and partners, highlighted the positive impact these programmes have within our communities.

We know the summer holidays can be an expensive time for many households, which is why we are proud to deliver a programme that offers exceptional value, with a wide range of affordable and accessible activities taking place across the Lisburn and Castlereagh area.

I hope all the children have thoroughly enjoyed their summer activities, and I look forward to welcoming families back to our centres, whether for future activity schemes or leisure visits throughout the year.”
