The Lincolnshire Portable Antiquities Scheme records archaeological objects found by the public.

This page provides information about finds, events and news from Lincolnshire through the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The project has been running in Lincolnshire since 2003, and since then has recorded over 75,000 finds reported by hundreds of individuals. These range from prehistoric flint axes to post-medieval toys, and come from a wide variety of landscapes, from Chalk Wolds to Fen and Coasta

This week please enjoy an amazing silver gilt Roman brooch from Hemsworth! Here in the SWYOR office we have recorded over 1600 Roman brooches, but never one quite like this!

It is considered to be of regional importance because of the ornate decoration and the unusual design. It is a Polden Hill brooch but it does not fit neatly into any known sub-type.

It was discovered in 2022 in Hemsworth, Wakefield, and recorded on the PAS database by the Lincolnshire FLO. Because it is made of silver, it was declared as Treasure and Wakefield Museum plan to acquire it.

Few Roman artefacts have been discovered in Hemsworth, making this an important addition to the collection and helping us understand the history of Hemsworth. See

for more information about why the museum plan to acquire the brooch and what they intend to do with it.

This week's is a Roman mount in the form of the face of the god Bacchus.

The mount was probably fixed to a vessel. The youthful, plump appearance of the god's face is a common way of depicting Bacchus, who was the Roman god of wine and revelry. His earlier Greek counterpart was Dionysus.

The appearance of depictions of the Roman gods on finds brought into PAS demonstrate the spread of Roman pre-Christian religion through the Empire.

This weeks is a cast copper-alloy twin-looped palstave axehead dating to the Middle Bronze Age (1200-1050 BC).

The object dates to the transitional period, when palstaves were beginning to replace earlier broad-bladed axeheads. The find is significant for Lincolnshire and the East of England, with twin-looped palstaves mainly occuring in western Britain.

Visit our display at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life to see this rare find up close!

This week's is an early medieval silver sceat, dating to c. AD 720-745.

The coin is an anonymous issue, known as the 'lion-head reverse' type.

The obverse depicts a diademed bust besides a cross, and the reverse depicts a lion's head with a long, snake-like tongue.

This week’s is a medieval cast copper-alloy strap end, depicting a human figure in the orans position, dating to between the 11th to 12th century AD.

The object is openwork with the central image of a human figure wearing a tunic with his arms raised above his head with bent elbows. This gesture is known as the orans gesture which was used as a gesture of prayer prior to folded hands which became the dominant prayer gesture in the 12th century. The orans gesture appears to have been a pagan tradition.

This week's is an Iron Age uninscribed gold stater of the Corieltauvi tribe, dating to the period c. BC 60-20.

The imagery on this coin is heavily stylised, and features a wreath, cloak and crescents on the obverse, and a disarticulated horse, a sun, star and the arm's of a charioteer on the reverse.

The Corieltauvi occupied much of Lincolnshire and surrounding counties during the late Iron Age when England was home to a number of tribes such as Boudicca's famous Iceni tribe.

Horse's were integral to Iron Age communities at the time for every day trade and transport, and are often depicted in various forms of late Iron Age art, particularly on coins found across England.
