When I work with pregnant mums, or even talking to friends, I hear some version of the same question over and over. How do I know I’m really communicating with my baby? How do I know I’m not just making it up?

But the deeper question underneath that one is always the same. Can I trust myself, can I trust what I’m sensing.

Culturally, we’ve been conditioned to mistrust our own listening from a very young age. Most of us were taught early on that authority lives outside of us, to the point where we disconnected from our own bodies, from what we’re sensing within.

Pregnancy is such a beautiful time to rebuild that connection to ourselves, because we are literally growing new life within us. It asks us to cultivate safety and trust from somewhere new, and there’s often a fear that opens up alongside that, one we can’t fully explain. Anyone who’s been pregnant knows this feeling. We’re getting in touch with a deeper field, we’re more open, our bodies are expanding, taking up space, creating space, and with that space comes access. It’s one of the most creative times in a woman’s life, a time we can get in touch with God, with life, with the universe, and with the soul of the baby coming through us.

Every baby that comes to us carries a lesson for us. And every baby wants to communicate with their parents, with their mother. They often already know what they need, what they’re bringing in, their own unique character, how they want to be born, how they want to be in communication with us. I’ve experienced this myself, I’ve watched friends experience it, clients experience it. Every single time a woman has stepped into real contact with her baby, it has been incredible.

These new souls coming into the world now carry such a clear capacity to communicate. They want to be felt, they want to be heard, and when we meet them there, it’s a gift, for the mother, for the parents, for the baby, because it means we get to walk alongside them consciously, and meet them exactly as they are, from the very beginning.

Two frame drums have just come through - a 14 inch deer hide drum, dyed purple with an ash frame and amethyst set into it, and a 14 inch cow hide drum, also dyed purple, with an oak frame and citrine.

This 16” frame drum has been handcrafted with a calf hide stretched over a beautifully shaped oak hoop. Dyed black to honour the mystery of the unseen and the depth within.

Nestled into the back is a piece of red cherry quartz, chosen to symbolising courage and an open heart.

A new drum has come to life.

On Saturday 12th September we’re hosting our next Sacred Frame Drum Birthing Workshop at Willow & Lore, a heritage farm tucked into the Antrim hills in Newtowncrommelin, Ballymena. A beautiful setting that asks you to slow down and be held by nature.

It’s a full day of building your own frame drum from scratch, from choosing your hide, your wood right through to cutting, lacing, building, and making the be**er that goes with it. There are guided meditations woven through the day to help you connect more deeply with the materials, so that at the end you’re holding a beautiful drum that came through you.

The hides are local and ethically sourced and treated without chemicals, just hardwood ash, and every skin is handled with real reverence.

Motherhood has this strange double pace to it, everything fleeting and fast at once, and we’re so rarely choosing to actually slow down and truly see the connection that’s moving between us and our children in any given moment. These photos did that for me. Looking at them now I can see something I don’t always let myself notice while I’m living it, how much tenderness is actually there, how much presence, something that has settled into my actual way of being with them, into the way I mother and love them, my steadiness and patience, even amid the noise, the mess, the never quite stopping. Maturation is so confronting because it asks us to walk directly toward what we have avoided for so long. It asks us to sit in discomfort, to stop running, to stop numbing, and to meet the truth of the heartbreak - the little girl or boy within us still colouring the way we see ourselves and the world.

But what if the very thing we are avoiding is the thing that can set us free? If there is one truth I have learned on my journey, it is that I only ever truly grow when I choose discomfort, when I hold my heart and move through the layers of protection I built when the world told me it wasn’t safe to live fully. And yet, to live with an open heart is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced - to sit with discomfort and then feel the sweetness of aliveness when light breaks through the pain is what makes us human.

Don’t waste your precious life running from your own aliveness. The time is now. But you have to choose it - nobody can move through the discomfort for you. And when you are ready, the teacher always arrives. 🌹
