🦴 Your muscles aren’t the only thing listening when you lift weights. Your BONES are too.
When we talk about strength training after 50, we often focus on keeping our muscles strong.
But underneath those muscles is another very good reason to pick up some resistance…
Your bones.
Bone is living tissue. And one of the signals that encourages it to maintain its strength is loading.
That’s one reason resistance training becomes so valuable as we get older.
Research in adults over 50 particularly postmenopausal women suggests appropriately programmed resistance training can help maintain or improve bone mineral density, including at important areas such as the hip and spine
And there’s another benefit.
Strength training also builds the muscles that help you move confidently and maintain your balance an important part of reducing the circumstances that can lead to falls and fractures.
So what should you actually do?
You don’t need a complicated programme.
Try to include movements such as:
🏋️ SQUAT sit-to-stands or goblet squats
💪 PUSH wall, incline or dumbbell press
🚣 PULL rows
🛍️ CARRY farmer’s carries
↘️ HINGE deadlift variations
A useful target is 2–3 strength sessions per week, with the Royal Osteoporosis Society suggesting working towards 8–12 repetitions and up to 3 sets.
