One of our 2014s coaches
"My name is Andrew and I'm a coach for the East Fife 2014 Community Football Club. I've been involved in the set up for almost 7 years now.
I used to play football myself until I got injured which lead to me getting involved because my son was taking part in the walking football when he was small up at the academy. Once he got a bit older, I saw myself taking on more of a role and now I'm the manager!
There's two teams in the age groups, the Blacks and the Golds. There's around 35 youngsters involved altogether. For some of them, this is all that matters. Whatever is going on in school or that, once they're on the field they are ready to give it all for their teammates. If you give youngsters something to engage with, they'll thrive.
Before every team talk I'll always ask "what's the most important thing for you today" and the answer I always get is for them to enjoy themselves. Through enjoyment comes development, they'll thrive in this environment and as they thrive, they grow. From a coaching point of view, to be a role model for them means everything to me, just to be able to have fun with them. It's more than football, it's communication and that team spirit.
Funding is tough, the families pay and that goes towards pitch fees and they'll get 2 training sessions a week and a game on weekends. We are a registered charity but like I say, it's tough. So we come to events and galas or we have the wee shop occasionally on Wellesley Road, and everything raised goes into the club.
The kids are growing all the time and new kits cost money, we want them to look and feel the part so events like today are vital for that, every single penny raised goes towards that.
Football has been good to me, I love the game and I love being able to give back and play a part in the lives of young people. Youngsters get a bad reputation now and it's a fight to keep going but I'll never give up, to give them that enjoyment and provide them with memories and maybe give them a bit of an escape, that's exactly why I do this"
If you can support this vital set up, please get in touch with East Fife Community Football Club or share Andrews story in the hope that someone out there can help them out. Thanks!
