What really burns fat in midlife? Muscle. šŖ
Not because muscle magically āburns fat,ā but because it changes the way your body works.
As we reach midlife, we naturally lose muscle unless we actively build it and use it to keep it. That loss can slow our metabolism, reduce insulin sensitivity, and make it harder to lose body fat.
Strength training helps reverse that.
The more lean muscle you build, the more energy your body uses throughout the day š„
šŖMuscle also improves how your body handles blood sugar and helps create the conditions for sustainable fat loss.
And hereās the part so many women missā¦
The goal isnāt to be smaller. Itās to change your body composition.
You can weigh the sameāor even a little moreābut have less body fat, more lean muscle, a stronger body, better posture, more energy, and clothes that fit better. This is 9/10 what most of clients say they want in their questionnaires.
The scale only tells you your weight.āØYour body composition tells you your health.
Let stop chasing skinny and start building strength.

Noticing more weight around your middle, even though youāre doing what always worked before?
Youāre not imagining it.
During midlife, hormonal changes, reduced muscle mass and declining insulin sensitivity can all make it easier to store fat around the abdomen.
The answer isnāt endless cardio or eating as little as possible especially for midlife women. Letās not stress the body out further.
Instead, focus on:
⨠Building muscle through strength training.
⨠Prioritising protein and fibre.
⨠Eating enough to support your metabolism.
⨠Being consistent rather than perfect.
Your body isnāt working against youāit simply has different needs than it did 10 or 20 years ago. Supporting it with nourishing food, regular strength training, movement you enjoy, good sleep and stress management can have a huge impact on how you feel.

Midlife has a way of asking more of us, or it can seem that way at times.
The juggling and pressures of careers, families, ageing parents, changing hormones, poor sleep, stress⦠and somehow weāre also expected to fit in an athletes training schedule or thatās what social media may have you believing.
The truth is, building muscle in midlife isnāt about chasing a smaller body or striving for perfection. Itās about investing in your future health š« š¦“
šŖMuscle is one of the most powerful things we can build as we age. It helps protect our bones, supports our metabolism, improves balance and mobility, and helps us stay strong enough to do the things we love. As in now but also in 20 years time.
š¶š»āāļø Keeping your independence as you get older should be your number 1 driver.
Muscle also plays a huge role in body composition. As we get older, we naturally lose it if we donāt actively work to maintain it. That can mean a higher proportion of body fat, even if the number on the scales doesnāt change. Building and preserving muscle helps create a stronger, healthier bodyānot just a lighter one.
But I also know itās not easy š„°

I havenāt posted in a while, my consistency on socials is well⦠very inconsistent! I understand that to stay relevant in my line of work, help as many women as I can and to keep them coming through the door is to be seen but that comes with a lot of pressure when I just want to hide from the world, and to be honest I would rather retreat and post nothing than show up and post bu****it that doesnāt help anyone.
One thing I have learned throughout my menopause journey is that anything you havenāt dealt with or buried deep to deal with at a later date because you didnāt have time to deal with it, comes pushing through to the front with a sense of urgency. Which is great in a sense of a clearing out the old emotions, but this on top of an already overwhelmed nervous system can be a lot to handle.
ššDeclining and fluctuating hormones means we are not as resilient as we were once and the stress buffer does not buff as efficiently!
Last week I felt exactly like this, and the only thing that helps to regulate me is getting outdoors and movement. I took myself up and just sat there for half an hour watching everything in the distance until my monkey mind calmed down.
So if you feel like this too sometimes I just wanted you to know that you are not aloneš„° you donāt have to go up a hill but find somewhere quiet and take the time for yourself.
