Lift Hands – The Internal Arts Journal
Volume 34 • June 2026
After more than a year's sabbatical, Lift Hands returns with a renewed identity whilst remaining true to the principles that have guided it from the beginning: thoughtful scholarship, honest enquiry, and a commitment to sharing knowledge freely.
This issue features contributions from writers and practitioners across the internal arts and beyond, including research, history, personal reflections, travel, poetry, book reviews, and conversation—all brought together with the belief that understanding grows when ideas are shared openly.
As always, Lift Hands remains free at source.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed bringing it together.

“When a man dies, his good deeds come to an end, except three: Ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who will pray for him.”
Hadith | Bukhari
14 years… we are still learning and benefiting from the knowledge you left behind. Thank you for the open heart with which you gave freely. Thank you for all you did for myself and many others. May your spirit rest in eternal peace 🤲🏼

A massive thank you to everyone who has bought a copy of 'The Complete Lóngháquán', and for the wonderful comments regarding the book - copies of which have also been requested and deposited with the martial arts faculty at the University of Chengdu in China. I am honoured and humbled and reminded once again of the blessing I had by having such a wonderful teacher, guide and friend in Erle Montaigue. 🙏
"Lóngháquán" stands as a tribute to Nasser's fervent pursuit of Taijiquan's authentic spirit, highlighting not only its health advantages but also its profound martial roots. His methodology aligns with the venerable masters' views, who recognized in Taijiquan a medium for personal development, a self-defense mechanism, and a lifestyle harmonizing our internal dualities.
As both a researcher and practitioner of Taijiquan, I am captivated by the story that unfolds within these pages—a narrative that seamlessly integrates tradition with innovation. Nasser's examination of Taijiquan's reflexive combat application enlightens those in search of depth and authenticity in their practice. It beckons a return to the origins, to the quintessence of Taijiquan that transcends cultural barriers and resonates with the universal search for equilibrium and concord."

"Looking back on our conversation again, I have a deeper understanding of you. I give you my respect my friend! You are a real Taijiquan teacher and a martial artist. What you have done is very good... Let the Chinese martial arts community see that there are also such good teachers overseas who insist on spreading real Taijiquan...
I really want to learn authentic Chinese martial arts from you (I never thought about learning traditional Chinese martial arts before meeting you)... You've actually changed some of my longstanding thoughts and even prejudices about traditional Chinese martial arts."
La Chang Xu

An Italian translation will be available in the new years I turn my intentions towards the next venture. Watch this space.

We have decided to reschedule this event to October 2025 due to time constraints and a very busy 2024 schedule. The Italian edition of The Complete Lóngháquán will be available soon as a study aid to this workshop. As requested, I will also be adding additional teaching material to the itinerary in 2025 and it will be held over a longer weekend.

The Complete Lóngháquán
Available Now! Limited Print Run.
"Whilst the training method of Lóngháquán has been in the public domain for decades, several aspects linked to it are dispersed across the ‘system’. What I have attempted here is to draw all these strands together under one roof, so to speak. This is the first time that such a consolidation is being attempted."

With 200 pages, printed on high quality paper, this A4 soft back is available as a limited print. Packed with information, from theory to combat - all 5 methods are presented in one volume. This is the first in a series of books detailing the major components of Old Yang Taiji and what is commonly [although erroneously] referred to as the 'Erle Montaigue System'.
Even though the training method comes directly from within Taijiquan — its concepts and methods can be utilised by other martial arts as well, especially those which have taken their inspiration from Chinese Martial Arts. The external martial artist [the various styles of Karate] can also gain much from this training method since it encourages heaviness with softness and ‘no-technique’.
RRP: UK £49.99 plus Postage & Packaging [this will vary from country to country, please email for further details].
FOR THOSE STUDENTS TRAINING WITH THE GUILD [PETER JONES/NASSER BUTT], AN EXCLUSIVE PRICE OF £44.99 PLUS P&P.
