Active Leeds – Exercising Safely in the Heat
Stay Active, Stay Safe ☀️
With warmer weather expected, we’d like to remind all Active Leeds customers to take extra care when exercising in the heat.
To help you stay safe and enjoy your activity, please follow these simple precautions:
✅ Stay hydrated – Drink water before, during and after exercise. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty, as this can be an early sign of dehydration.
✅ Exercise at cooler times of the day – Where possible, choose early morning or evening sessions and avoid the hottest part of the day.
✅ Reduce intensity if needed – High temperatures place additional stress on the body. Slow down, take regular breaks and listen to your body. Consider reducing the duration of your exercise session.
✅ Wear suitable clothing – Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can help keep you cool and comfortable.
✅ Watch for signs of heat-related illness – Dizziness, headache, unusual fatigue, nausea, muscle cramps or excessive sweating can be signs of heat exhaustion. Stop exercising, move to a cool area and seek assistance if symptoms persist.
✅ Take extra care if you have a health condition – Older adults, people with underlying health conditions and those taking certain medications may be more vulnerable to the effects of heat.
Your wellbeing is our priority. If you feel unwell at any point while exercising, please stop and speak to a member of the Active Leeds team.
Stay safe, stay hydrated and enjoy your activity. 💙

FREE Summer Swimming Lessons 📣 Parents & Guardians
Active Leeds has partnered with Healthy Holidays Leeds to offer FREE swimming lessons over the Summer holidays*
Our aim is to help as many children as possible learn this vital life skill and stay safe in and around water. Since Summer 2021, nearly 6,000 children have taken part, each receiving four days of free lessons and we want even more families to benefit this year.
*Who are the lessons for? Children aged 7–12 (School Years 3–7) who:
👉Are non-swimmers or beginners (e.g., need buoyancy aids, cannot swim 5–10m without support)
and
👉Are eligible for income based free school meals (pupil premium) or are known to be from low‑income families
All primary schools have been provided with a limited number of vouchers. We encourage parents/guardians to speak to their child’s school if they believe their child is eligible, so they don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity. Please note it might be the school have already assigned the Summer vouchers, but we will be running the same provision again in 2027 so watch this space!
