Something I've believed since the very beginning of my teaching career is that Pilates isn't one thing for one type of person.
It's a practice that can hold you at every stage of life. Every season. Every version of yourself.
When I founded Chapel Allerton Pilates, this was the vision. Not a studio for the already-fit, or the already-flexible, or the people who've never had an injury or a difficult diagnosis or a body that's been through something and needs a little more care. A studio for everyone. A studio that could genuinely meet you where you are.
Over thirty years of teaching I've watched people move through what I think of as three stages.
Heal, where the focus is on rebuilding trust and function after pain or injury or life. Prevent, where we build the deep strength and resilience that protects the body for the long term. And Thrive, that remarkable moment when a client realises they're not managing their body anymore, they're actually living in it.
What I've learned is that these stages aren't linear. You might move between them throughout your life, and that's not failure, that's just being human. What matters is having somewhere that understands all three and knows how to support you through each of them.
That's what we've spent thirty years building.

When the teaching is right, you don't just feel it in your body. You feel it in the room.
We care deeply about the environment here, because Pilates deserves a proper home. The right apparatus. A clean, considered space. Teachers who know their subject inside out and love sharing it. That combination is not as common as it should be, and we never take it for granted.
So to hear that it comes through in the experience, every time, means everything to us.

Nobody really prepares you for how your body changes in your 40s and 50s.
The fatigue that wasn't there before. The sleep that stopped being reliable. The pelvic floor you thought you'd dealt with after having children, quietly shifting again. The balance that's just slightly less certain than it used to be.
I'm in the early stages of perimenopause myself. I say that because this isn't advice from a distance.
I'm living it alongside many of you. And after 30 years of teaching movement, I want to be clear about something: what you're feeling is real, it's hormonal, and most of it responds remarkably well to the right kind of Pilates.
Bone density. Muscle mass. Pelvic health. Balance. Your nervous system. All five are covered in this carousel and all five are things we work with every single day at the studio.
Swipe through, especially slide 3. It's the one most women tell me they wish they'd known sooner.

We've always believed you should understand what's happening in your body, not just follow instructions.
There's a difference between being told what to do in a class and being taught. We try, always, to give you the understanding behind the movement. Why this. Why now. What it's actually doing. Because when you know that, you carry it with you. Into your daily life, into how you move, into how you think about your body.

I've taught Pilates for over thirty years, and I can tell you exactly what nearly broke me. It wasn't the early mornings or the late evenings. It was forgetting to ever put the work down myself.
Teaching is a strange kind of giving. You spend your day deeply attuned to other people's bodies, their breath, the small thing they're not saying about their shoulder or their week. You get good at it. You get so good at it that you can forget to turn any of that attention back on yourself.
This year's teacher's retreat is about presence. How to stay close to your clients without quietly emptying yourself out in the process, and how to bring that same care back into your own practice, on your own mat, for once.
We'll have a special guest, a relaxation session, good food, and pizza and cocktails with people who understand exactly what this work asks of you. It's a small group, so it stays the kind of weekend where you're actually seen.
Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July, here at the studio. If you're a teacher in the Yorkshire area who's given a lot this year and could do with someone holding the space for you instead, this one's for you.

People are sometimes surprised by how much they feel in a class here. It doesn't look like much from the outside.
What Pilates does, when it's taught well, is reach into the muscles that other things miss entirely. The deep stabilisers. The ones that have been waiting to be woken up. That is not about effort for effort's sake. It is intelligent movement, building exactly what your body needs for the long term.
And if you're new to it, that is genuinely the best time to start. We love working with people who come to us fresh. No habits to undo. Just a body ready to learn.
Classes are popular so please book in advance to guarantee your place. 3 classes for £39 for new clients at chapelallertonpilates.co.uk.

Your body has been adapting to your desk for years. Not failing. Adapting.
The stiffness when you stand up. The back that aches on the commute home. The tension across your shoulders that never quite leaves. These aren't random. They're a pattern. And patterns can change.
I've been teaching movement in Leeds for over 30 years, and the clients who surprise themselves most are the ones who've been sitting at a desk their whole working life. They arrive expecting to feel stiff and limited. Within a few weeks they can't quite believe what their body is capable of.
Swipe through all 5 signs, especially number 3. It's the one that lands hardest.
