The Yorkshire Three Peaks 🥾

Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Three mountains, around 24 miles and a challenge that has been attracting walkers for generations.

My first ever mountain was actually Pen-y-ghent. I climbed it with the Scouts when I was younger, long before I became a Mountain Leader.

I’ve walked the Three Peaks many times since, and it’s still a great day out. Each of the three mountains is different, with plenty of variety along the way and some fantastic views across the Yorkshire Dales.

It’s a tough walk, but there’s a real sense of achievement when you finish it.

I’ll be leading a guided Yorkshire Three Peaks walk on Saturday 24 October for anyone who fancies taking on the challenge.

🥾 Old Man of Coniston, Dow Crag, Swirl How & Wetherlam

On 11 October I’ll be heading out from Coniston for a 14-mile walk taking in four summits and some fantastic Lake District scenery.

The route starts along Walna Scar Road, passing Blind Tarn before heading up to Dow Crag. From there we drop down to Goat’s Hawse before climbing to the Old Man of Coniston.

We then follow the ridge to Swirl How, head down the Prison Band and make our way up to Wetherlam before descending through Red Dell to finish.

It’s a full mountain day with plenty of ups and downs, good views and a great sense of achievement when you get back down.

The walk is led by me, a fully qualified Mountain Leader, and I’ll make sure we have a suitable route for the conditions on the day. Mountain days can change depending on the weather, so if needed we’ll take an alternative route.

Do you want to feel more confident using a map and compass? 🧭

My map reading and compass courses are designed to help you build the skills and confidence to navigate independently.

We’ll cover everything from using linear features such as walls and rivers, to understanding contours, map symbols and different types of maps. You’ll also learn how to use grid references and a compass, including taking bearings from the ground to the map and using back bearings.

Set in the stunning surroundings of Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales, by the end of this one day course, you’ll have the basic map reading and compass skills to help you navigate with confidence and hopefully get yourself out of a tricky situation if the weather takes a turn! 🌦️

📅 Upcoming course dates:
Sunday 25th October
Sunday 13th December

💷 £55 per person

📍 Ingleborough, Yorkshire Dales

One of the UK’s best-known walking challenges, the Yorkshire Three Peaks takes you across three iconic summits: Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in one demanding circular route.

It’s a challenge for a reason. Covering around 24 miles with over 1,500m of ascent, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.

But the reward is some incredible Yorkshire scenery, from dramatic limestone landscapes and open moorland to far-reaching views across the Yorkshire Dales.

Want to take on the challenge without having to worry about navigating the route? On 5th September, I’ll be guiding a group around the Yorkshire Three Peaks, with the aim of completing the challenge in under 12 hours.

Three walks. Three days. Three counties. 🥾

There are just three walks left in August, and there’s a good mix depending on what you fancy.

📍 Saturday 29 August – Brown Knoll & Mam Tor, Peak District
A great day in the Peak District, taking in Brown Knoll and the iconic Mam Tor with some fantastic views along the way.

📍 Sunday 30 August – Roseberry Topping & Captain Cook’s Monument, North Yorkshire
A Yorkshire favourite with two well-known landmarks, taking in Roseberry Topping and heading up to Captain Cook’s Monument.

📍 Monday 31 August – Kentmere Horseshoe, Lake District
A full day in the Lakes and a fantastic horseshoe route around the Kentmere Valley. A proper mountain day with some great views.

Three different walks, three different areas and three chances to get out into the hills before August is over.

If you’ve been meaning to get out walking more this summer, why not join me for one?

I’ve always been happiest outdoors. I was in Scouts and Venture Scouts when I was younger and spent a lot of time walking, which is where my love of the mountains really started.

When I came across the Mountain Leader qualification, it seemed like a natural next step. I already had plenty of experience in the outdoors and wanted to be able to use that to lead others in the mountains.

What I enjoy most about guiding is seeing people discover what they can do.

For some, it might be their first proper mountain walk. For others, it could be achieving a goal they’ve been working towards for a long time. Being able to share some of my knowledge and experience and help people feel more confident outdoors is something I really enjoy.

There’s something about being out in the mountains that never gets old. The views, the quiet, the weather, the challenges, you never quite know what the day will bring.

The outdoors is where I’m at home, and I’d like to help more people experience just how good it can be.

If you've been meaning to spend a day in the hills, tackle your first mountain, or learn some new navigation skills, there's still time to make it happen ☀️

I've got spaces available on a number of guided walks over the coming weeks, and whether you're completely new to hill walking or looking to build your confidence in the mountains, I'd love to help.

One of the things I enjoy most about leading walks is seeing people realise they're capable of more than they thought. Reaching a summit is always rewarding, but it's the confidence you gain along the way that stays with you.

With over 30 years of experience leading people in the outdoors, my aim is simple: to help you enjoy the mountains safely, learn something new, and have a fantastic day out.

Take a look at my upcoming walks or send me a message if you'd like to find the right one for you. 📲
