🏉 U14s Match Report🏉
Bronte Barbarians 4 – 42 Wetherby
Bronte Barbarians U14s faced their toughest test of the season as they welcomed unbeaten Wetherby in a top-of-the-table clash.
Having led the league since the opening day, Bronte knew they were up against quality opposition chasing down the top spot. From the first whistle, both sides went toe-to-toe in a fierce, physical contest, with neither team giving an inch as they traded set for set.
The breakthrough came after a Bronte error gifted Wetherby possession, allowing the visitors to open the scoring. The game continued to be a bruising encounter with some huge tackles and powerful carries from both teams, but Wetherby gradually gained the upper hand in the arm wrestle, adding further tries to extend their lead. Bronte refused to give in and were rewarded with a try just before the break, going into half-time trailing 20-4.
The second half began with more misfortune for the home side as an unfortunate bounce from the kick-off fell kindly for Wetherby, who capitalised with an early score. Bronte continued to battle until the final whistle, but Wetherby showed why they remain unbeaten, producing some excellent rugby to secure a 42-4 victory.
Coach Ady said:
“The scoreline doesn’t represent the physicality of the game. That group of players went to war, knocked the hell out of each other and put on a great show.
We’ll dust ourselves down and go again. We need to roll our sleeves up and work hard to chase that top spot back.
What pleased me the most was the sportsmanship shown after the game. Seeing both teams sit down together for a meal afterwards as though they were long-lost mates is what rugby league is all about.”
While the result didn’t go Bronte’s way, the commitment, toughness and togetherness shown by the lads was there for all to see. They’ll regroup, learn from the experience and look to bounce back in the weeks ahead.
Well played to Wetherby, and best of luck for the rest of the season.

🏉 Bronte Barbarians U7s Festival🏉
Bronte Barbarians U7s made the trip to Mirfield for another fantastic festival, with Doncaster and Wyke also taking part in a brilliant morning of junior rugby league.
The Barbarians started the day full of energy against Doncaster, producing one of their strongest defensive performances so far this season. Every player was switched on from the first whistle, working together to move up as a team, claim their tags, and communicate brilliantly. Their confidence with the ball continued to grow, with some excellent footwork, pace down the edges, and great teamwork leading to some well-deserved scores.
The second game against Wyke brought a different challenge. Wyke caught Bronte off guard early with their quick play-the-ball, but the young Barbarians showed fantastic resilience to regroup. Their defence became stronger as the game went on, and after working tirelessly for one another, Bronte produced two superb team tries through quick thinking, support play, and determination.
The final game against hosts Mirfield proved to be a valuable learning experience. Mirfield were an exceptionally well-organised side, showing excellent structure in both attack and defence. Although Bronte found it difficult to break them down, the players never stopped competing, continued to work hard for each other, and showed great character right until the final whistle.
Coach Paul was delighted with the progress the team continues to make week after week.
"It's fantastic to see how much this group is coming together. Their confidence is growing every week, and you can really see the players beginning to understand their own roles while helping and encouraging their teammates. The effort, teamwork, and willingness to learn have been outstanding, and I'm incredibly proud of every one of them."
If your child is in Reception or Year 1 and would like to give rugby league a try, we'd love to welcome them to Bronte Barbarians. Whether they're completely new to the sport or have played before, everyone is welcome. Come along, make new friends, build confidence, learn new skills, and most importantly—have fun!

⚫ ⚪️U18s Match Report | Bentley ARLFC 12–30 Bronte ⚪️⚫️
Our U18s made the trip to Bentley ARLFC and came away with a deserved 30-12 victory, earning another valuable two competition points.
The lads started brightly, completing sets well and showing plenty of aggression in defence. The early pressure paid off when Joe Huskins crossed for the opening try, with Ryan Wood (sponsored by Ultimate Heights Scaffolding) adding the extras.
Bronte continued to build momentum, with Rylee Wilks finishing off a well-worked move for our second try. Ryan Wood was again on target with the conversion to make it 12-0.
Credit to Bentley, who responded well. A kick finding touch handed them excellent field position, which they capitalised on to reduce the deficit to 12-6. Another strong spell, aided by a penalty, saw them level the scores at 12-12.
The response from our lads was excellent. Joe Huskins’ clever kick-off regained possession, and from the resulting field position, some superb attacking shape created space for Rylee Wilks to grab his second of the afternoon. Joe added the conversion to send Bronte into the break leading 18-12.
The second half was played in wet conditions after the rain arrived at half-time, making the ball slippery and handling difficult. Despite errors from both sides, Bronte dominated field position throughout, with most mistakes coming deep inside Bentley’s 20.
Strong carries and excellent ball movement created the next opportunity, with Harrison Tonks (sponsored by Do Not Bend Supplies) powering over down the short side. Joe Huskins added another conversion.
Bronte finished strongly, with Thomas Mist (sponsored by Go Local Extra – Austin Road Stores) proving a constant handful all afternoon before crashing over under the posts to seal the game. Ryan Wood converted to complete an impressive 30-12 victory.

Heworth 4 – 28 Bronte Barbarians U13’s Girls
Bronte Barbarians U13’s Girls made it six wins from six with a hard-fought 28-4 away victory at Heworth in one of their toughest tests of the season. From the outset, the match was played at a fierce pace, with Bronte facing a Heworth side of 20 while fielding just 10 players themselves. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bronte matched their hosts for effort and intensity, staying organised, defending bravely and refusing to let the pressure tell.
The turning points came as Bronte absorbed wave after wave of Heworth attack, forced mistakes and then made the most of their chances when they came. After scoring first, they were pegged back by an excellent solo try from the hosts, but Bronte responded well and regained control before the break to go in 16-4 ahead. That half-time lead reflected not only their composure under pressure, but also the way they turned defence into attack at key moments.
Fatigue began to show after the break, but the Barbarians kept working for one another. The forwards laid the platform with tough carries, the backs shared the workload, and the halves found space wide to finish with tries in the corners and seal another impressive win.
Coaches Gav & Sophie said:
"We knew this would be a tough challenge and Heworth, even in their first game of the season, were physical, well organised and asked plenty of questions of us.
We’re incredibly proud of every player. Their effort, character and willingness to dig in for each other was outstanding. It was a real team performance and another important step forward for this group."
A big thank you to Heworth for their hospitality and for providing such a competitive fixture. Congratulations to their players and coaching staff on an excellent performance, and thanks to everyone who travelled to support the girls as they extended their unbeaten start to the season to six matches.

First Win of the Season! 🙌
Bronte U13s secured their first victory of the season with a fantastic team performance against a big, physical Dearn Valley Bulldogs side.
The lads were outstanding from the first whistle, showing tremendous commitment in defence with some bone-crunching tackles and superb cover defence to shut down Dearn Valley's attacking threats. From the sidelines, this looked like a completely different Bronte team, with the improvements made over recent weeks clear for everyone to see.
The forwards laid a fantastic platform all game, working tirelessly through the middle and giving the backs plenty of opportunities to attack. Bronte's 1, 6, 7 and 9 were particularly influential with the ball in hand, controlling the game well and making the most of the hard work done up front.
With temperatures soaring, conditions were tough for both teams, but credit must also go to the referee for managing regular water breaks to ensure all the players stayed safe and well hydrated.
Coaches' Comments
Mikey and Cameron were delighted with the performance and the progress the squad has made.
"We're incredibly proud of the lads. The quality of our training sessions has really improved, and we could see that out on the field today. Our defence was outstanding, and it was brilliant to see our spine all playing well together, which hasn't happened much this season. We've finally got something to build on, and every single one of them is absolutely buzzing after getting that first win."
A huge thank you to all our parents, volunteers, and sponsors for their continued support throughout the season. Your encouragement means so much to the players and coaching staff.
The lads now enjoy a week off for the Magic Weekend, before looking to carry this momentum into the next fixture.
Well done, lads! 🙌💛🖤
