⚖️🐴 WEIGH DAY @ MVT 🐴⚖️
How they look isn't always a true reflection of the horse stood in front of you. Horses have different body shapes, conditions and needs and it's important that all of those factors are taken into consideration when weighing and body scoring a horse.
Yesterday I overheard one of the MVT Family members talking to Nikki Meggison about how hard it was to maintain her horses weight when living a more conventional life. She worked so hard soaking nets, managing turnout, fixing grazing muzzles and ensuring her horse was exercised daily, often not getting home until after 9pm - all for a 20kg weight loss. Of course it was better than nothing but with the amount of time, effort and work it had taken, 20kg was rather disappointing. Hearing this got me thinking about how many people must be feeling like this 😞
She then went on to say..."And then he came here and has lost 64kg all by himself just living on the track!"
This is what really got me because not only is it true but he has a much better quality of life now and is a much happier horse because it. And, his human is much happier too. She has her life back and now the time she spends with her horse is quality time, instead of time spent worrying, planning and thinking about all the things she needs to do to keep him moving, exercised and healthy instead of being present and just enjoying the time they spend together 💞
This isn't to say that tracks are the solution!
Tracks provide a much more natural and enriching life, with the freedom to move and constant access to hay.
For some horses, Track Life can be all they need to maintain a healthy weight but some chunky monkeys will still need extra exercise to help shift the pounds and help maintain a more desired weight, whilst others might need some extra feed to provide safe calories.
Thank you Nikki Meggison BSc Hons - Independent Equine Nutritionist for another wonderful visit. It is always a pleasure to see you and your smiling face 🥰
If you want someone who is calm, kind & gentle, who does not rush and allows each horse the time they need to investigate and build confidence when stepping onto the scales then look no further because Nikki is all of those things and so much more 💯
