Orkney golf club mens report

The final open of the 2026 golf season was played on Saturday at Orkney golf club.

The Highland Park open that had been postponed in April due to a waterlogged course was played in damp drizzly conditions with slight northerly breeze blowing all day.

A reasonable turnout of 65 gents teed up for the event with low scoring proving difficult.

In the gross section it was Lee Findlay who again took top spot with a 71 gross. Wayne Monkman pipping Steven Rendall to second place on countback both carding rounds of 72.

The nett winner was Andrew Bonner who's 73 gross 68 nett was the only score under par all day, second place went Wayne Small on 69 nett and third was Scott Ralph with a nett 70.

Club captain Derek Robb thanked the Highland Park for their continued support for the club which is most appreciated, he also thanked Chris and the greenstaff for getting the course playable after the deluge on Friday and the bar staff for their work throughout the day.

The previous Wednesday saw a sweep played in an East wind with 28 taking part.
Andrew Bonner was third overall on nett 70, Bruce Moar second on 69 and Martin Peace took first place on countback also scoring a nett 69 .

Sunday then saw the annual Cupal cup and shield played in kirkwall against our Stromness counterparts.

Stromness held both trophies coming into the fixtures but the gross Cupal Cup was emphatically won back by Orkney golf club by the score of seven and a half to a half.

Our gross team's have excelled this season winning the Cupal Cup back along with retaining the prestigious Wilson cup for the third year in a row and we wish them well in the upcoming Northern counties competition in Tain.

The Shield competition played for by either club's top Nett players was a much tighter affair, OGC held the advantage after the morning session by three points to one. They had one hand on the Shield when they won the first match of the afternoon session, but Stromness claimed the next two and it came down to the final match with Stromness needing a win and OGC a half for victory.
Stromness had a putt for the win on the 18th green but luckily for the home team it lipped out allowing OGC to reclaim the Shield for the first time since 2020 by the score of four and a half to three and a half.
At the presentation Derek again thanked Stromness for the matches, the bar staff and also Sheila and Linda for the lovely soup and sandwiches lunch.

This coming week sees the start of the September series on Wednesday and Friday with the final Glass Shop Monthly medals taking place on Monday 7th and Saturday 12th.

Ladies Section

The Highland Park Open was scheduled to be the first ‘open’ of the season but due to rather wet weather in April it was the last Open and was held on Saturday 29th with twenty-eight ladies taking part. In first place was Anna Livsey 70[41] with Doris Hutchison 72[14] in second place. Elizabeth Drever 75[26] and Kathleen Sutherland 75[9] tied for third place with Liz having the better back nine. The gross section was won by Michelle Clouston on 83 and countback came into play again with Shona Croy, Shona Slater and Kathleen Sutherland all on 84. Shona Croy had the best back nine to be second with Shona Slater in third place. The only two was by Karen Thomson at the 7th and the three at the 1st by Doris is a very rare occurrence by any of the ladies. The continued support to the club by Highland Park is very much appreciated.

Earlier in the month an SGL and Ticketyboo August medal was played in rather poor conditions although steady players Michelle Clouston 74[10] and Doris Hutchison 74[14] both played well. Michelle won by having the better back nine and had two’s at both the 7th and 10th. In third place was Elaine Gray 78[22]

The Bertha Fiddler Memorial Trophy was played for on Tuesday 23rd with nineteen ladies taking part. The winner was Judith Bonner on 70[20] and in second place was Lynn Shearer 72[15]. Elaine Gray 73[22] was third on countback from Michelle Clouston 73[11] and the only two was by Sandra Shearer at the 4th.

Sixteen ladies played in the Bring and Win competition on Thursday 27th with Michelle having the best gross score of 82 for a nett 71. In second place was Linda Bonner 73[16] and Judith Bonner 74[19] was third on countback from Doris Hutchison 74[14]. The only two was by Karen Johnstone at the fourth. All the ladies get a prize in this competition and many thanks go to Linda Bonner for making the prize giving so much fun.

The Matchplay competitions played over the summer are at the final stages and in the ladies doubles Linda Bonner and Diane Crawford beat Kay Mowat and Moira Irvine to win the Moore Trophy.

For all those playing in the Highland Park Open tomorrow, preferred lies will be in operation.

This Monday 31st the club is undertaking a community development project to help fund raise for the club.

We will be supplying and laying turf for a local project in Kirkwall, so ideally we’re requiring 3-4 volunteers to aid greenstaff complete the job professionally and efficiently.

If you’re relatively fit, keen to help, have a laugh and learn a new skill, give me a shout.
Hours will be 7am-midday, but any help in that time would be a huge benefit, even if it’s just 30mins!!

Quick reminder that entries close for the Highland Park Open this evening. It's the final open of the season at Orkney golf club so get your name in with a chance to win some lovely prizes.

On another whisky note, the Club has taken delivery of some lovely Glencairn whisky glasses. Ideal for presents or just for enjoying a dram of the sponsors product. They will be on sale at the bar on Saturday.

Its been a quiet week at Orkney golf club.

Last Friday saw a sweep played with 13 player's taking part.
Andrew Reid had the best nett on the day with a 68. Second was Ross McQuillan on countback from a gutted Martin Peace who finished third, both with 72 nett.

Sunday then had 24 players taking part in the Glass Shop August medal.
In the first division Lee Findlay shot a fantastic 67 gross for nett 69 to take first, 2nd and 3rd places also carded 69s with Graham Bell pipping Stevie Linklater for second spot.
In the second division Martin Flett (MBE) took top spot also with a 69 nett, second was Martin Peace on 71 and third Iain Wilkie on 73.
Thanks again to the Glass Shop for their continued support.

This coming Saturday sees the final open of the season being played.
The Highland Park Open should have been the first of the season but had to be rescheduled due to the weather Gods.
Hopefully this weekend will see better weather and a good entry.

Sunday then sees the Kirkwall v Stromness cupal Cup and Shield being played.
OGC will be hoping to reclaim the cup which Stromness won last year in a rare victory.

Whilst the Stromness Shield team will be strong favourites for the nett competition with their exaggerated away handicaps!!

Before all of that takes place there's a sweep this coming Wednesday the 26th, with first round of the September series getting underway the following Wednesday.

Finally this year's intercounty versus Shetland takes place in Dale, lerwick, over the weekend of the 19th and 20th of September, the list on the notice board has only a few names on it and we would really like to see a good few more members coming forward to make up a strong travelling contingent. We host this competition next year so could do with a few more players committing.
Anyone can take part high or low handicaps make no difference, its a fantastic weekend over which we will be very well treated by our hosts.
Players need to make their own travelling and accommodation arrangements so the sooner you do so the better . Transport for clubs etc will be provided.
