About The Trees

Great to have hosted OWL West Fife (our local division of Silvi Owlscotland) for their AGM this year. And a bonus skill-share from Julien Pearly, sharing his experiences in using music with woodland kids' groups. We were treated to a wee tune on the uke too; a song he wrote in memory of his late father.

As Peter and I started building the bothy, his longtime pal Andy gave us several huge rusty sawblades from the historic water-powered sawmill which sits in grounds in the Borders. Fast forward a year, and my lovely pal (and I'm happy to say teaching colleague, and fellow Burntislander) Kirsty Kirsty was continuing her creative exploits by learning traditional sign-painting. Surely just the thing for the bothy, I thought...

I got the call last night - Kirsty had finished it. I arrived so fast she had to wonder if I'd been camping at the end of her road. And here is the finished result in situ - I absolutely love it! And I hope the many lovely people who've shared days at the bothy with us feel it's a pretty natural fit. What do you reckon?

A few pics from an afternoon hosting the young people from the Burntisland-Flekkefjord Town Twinning; this year marks the 80th anniversary of the exchange, making it one of the oldest town twinnings in the UK. Five Norwegian youngsters come for the week, staying with five Burntislanders who visited Flekkefjord last year. The initiative exists to develop friendships and cultural links between the two towns, so rather nice the bothy was chosen again for one of their days in sunny Fife 🙂

An introduction to whittling, followed by hand stretched dough and wood-fired pizzas on the Ooni oven. Few things better than ending a day with pizza al fresco!

A lovely day at the bothy yesterday; friends getting together to enjoy a day of whittling, rope swings, chilling-out and cooking wood-fired pizzas. Always so nice to see the bothy being used in the way Peter and I hoped when we broke the ground three years ago.

Today sees Burntisland's 'twinners' visit with their guests from Flekkefjord (which Burntisland is twinned with). Another beautiful summer day in Fife - we've been spoiled for sunshine recently.

A lovely morning session with members at a local community shed. An introduction to whittling with local willow - the first of three sessions. As discussion turned to crochet, the whittling of a wee hook led to an impromptu demo from one of the ladies (I have never been able to crochet!). Looking forward to the next one 🙂

Came home with some chutney, and comb honey from the allotment bees on site. Happy days!

A lovely day spent with a group from Blesma, The Limbless Veterans - a charity supporting veterans and their families across Scotland. An introduction to knife-craft today, to be followed by other sessions where we'll begin to look at spoon carving.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, and always a pleasure to collaborate with charities working so hard to find meaningful (not to mention mindful) experiences and new skills for those they support.
