Lee Daniel Harry Daniel
I’m standing at the entrance to “Harry” the tunnel used in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944.
What looks like a simple stone line through the forest actually traces the route of the tunnel beneath the former POW camp at Żagań, Poland.
Harry began underneath Hut 104 and ran for roughly 111 metres, around 9 metres underground. It was barely large enough for a man to crawl through, yet the prisoners managed to install electric lighting, ventilation and even a small rail system to move men and excavated sand through it.
On the night of 24–25 March 1944, prisoners began making their way through the tunnel. 76 men escaped before the operation was discovered.
Only three eventually made it to freedom.
Of the men who were recaptured, 50 were later murdered by the Gestapo on Hitler’s orders.
One of the most remarkable parts of visiting the site is seeing just how far the tunnel actually ran. The stone memorial follows its path through the trees, with the entrance marked exactly where Hut 104 once stood.
A place most people know from The Great Escape, but standing here makes the real scale of what those men attempted much easier to understand.

🎶💗 LADIES… WE’RE RECRUITING! 💗🎶
Could YOU be our next Decibelle?
