The Beyond the Ultimate mountain ultra captivates in ways beyond measure. These images only tell part of the story. 

4am starts in cold valleys, huge days exposed in the mountains, high altitude summits and endless elevation. An event that pushes everyone to the limit.

Experiencing Kyrgyzstan in this way is truly magnificent though and it's a special place. The warmth of the locals, support between everyone and endless beauty in nature. The Tian Shans translate to 'mountains of heaven' and the last two weeks have been exactly that. I can't wait to look through all of the images and share more of the adventure.

So thankful to have shared this with everyone taking part, globalexpeditionmedics and especially the BTU team.

Magic in every way.

Kyrgyzstan Day 5 🇰🇬

An out and back kept us on track today, following the river up to a lunch spot at 3000m.

Complete with stunning peaks, a lot of horses, river crossings and lovely interactions with every local passed. There was also joy in Mr. Bite Whomp wafers (photo #3).

This is a place for the soul. Today that was best shared - I've loved every minute of prep with globalexpeditionmedics.

Taking the route less travelled...

Up into the Terskey Alatau, a sub range of the Tian Shan, along a bumpy 4x4 valley track until we hit 2380m. A herd of horses saw us off with a gallop. Although there was none of that for us, hitting a 350m climb straight away - with lungs very much not acclimatised and a morning humidity as the clouds burned off. 

After 45minutes, the land opened out into grazing pastures and we stopped to check the map. Naturally, we picked the 'up there' option of a close peak. Another steady hours plod later, we hit our highest point over 3000m, where we rested. Soaking in the serenity of nature and a shared experience - one of the best joys.

Day 4 done with globalexpeditionmedics and Visit Karakol. Complete with cows, eagles, horses & wild flower slopes. Incredible.

A 6 hour bus ride traversing the border of Kazakhstan, with views of Chong Kemin national park. Before following Issyk Kul into Karakol, passing various towns along the way.

The Montane Montane Spine Race Journey. It doesn't really end. It's an event that shapes everyone involved, even beyond the finish. 

It's extraordinary to capture the experience of runners across the Pennine Way. Each year I come away feeling equal parts exhausted and truly restored. Photography, the opportunities it brings and the people I meet fill my soul. 

I'm truly thankful I get to do this, but have the biggest thanks to everyone who I come across and shares these moments with.

Finish line scenes from yesterday and the early hours of our incredible Spine runners - the exhaustion, elation and, for some, disbelief in seeing the Border Hotel.

The last push. A notorious section.

Looking at the map, the final 7 miles seem like a stone's throw away from the finish line at Kirk Yetholm. But the reality on the ground is this section is punishing. Descending into Hut 2 from Auchope Cairn at 743m, runners then have to face The Schil - the final moorland ascent, sitting at 605m.

The huts across this section are the only places of respite, the exposed nature of the Cheviots resulting in continuous weather changes. It's only moorland cows and the hardy wild goats of the Cheviots seen grazing in these parts.

But, between it all, it's one of the most beautifully serene places to welcome runners in - the beginning of the end of their Montane Spine Race journey.

Bellingham CP is starting to see more of our Spiners make their way through today, the last stop to access drop bags and any limited comfort. Our checkpoint teams are providing a very warm welcome as they make their way in, ready with a smile and the infamous feet buckets.

With the wet underfoot and weather conditions, swinging between rain and sunshine, the humidity is very much on the rise - ideal for blisters to make an appearance, with globalexpeditionmedics doing an incredible job of keeping our runners on the go.
