**Sometimes, the most important thing we give people isn’t a perfectly trained dog - it’s reassurance.** 💛

Over the past few days and weeks, some rather lovely comments have appeared beneath our posts:

💬 “Absolutely invaluable and very reassuring to know we’re getting things right.”

💬 “We’ve learnt how to help Dave.”

💬 “Violet is loving her quieter walks with lots of sniffing time and her new lead!”

💬 “It was really useful. See you again soon.”

And together, those words sum up what I want people to take away from training.

It isn’t simply about teaching a dog to sit, stay or walk beautifully on a lead. It’s about helping the humans at the other end of that lead to:

🐾 Understand what their dog is communicating
🐾 Recognise what may be driving a behaviour
🐾 Know what to change - and what they’re already getting right
🐾 Leave with realistic, manageable ways to move forward
🐾 Feel reassured that they don’t have to figure everything out alone

Sometimes we train new skills. Sometimes we change the environment, slow life down or look at a familiar problem differently.

And sometimes, the most valuable outcome is hearing someone say:

**“Now we understand how to help our dog.”**

Because when humans gain understanding and confidence, life begins to feel better at both ends of the lead. 💛

🐾 **And then there was Dougie…** 😂💙

Some of our testers entered the Scent, Search & Exploration Room and took a moment to look around.

Dougie entered like a wrecking ball.

There was no gentle introduction required here. 😂

He was OFF.

Fast, furious and very quickly on the case, Dougie swept around the room... and around again... and around again.

But there's something really interesting to watch in his video.

He keeps going back.

He'll investigate an area, move away, search somewhere completely different... and then circle back for another check.

To us humans, that can look a little odd.

"You've already looked there, Dougie!"

But Dougie isn't working from our imaginary checklist of places he's already searched.

He's following **scent**.

And each sweep of the room gives him another opportunity to gather information.

He searches from different directions.
At different heights.
He revisits areas.
He checks places that didn't pay off previously.

And gradually...

the room gets cleared. 👃😂

That's one of the things I've found so fascinating while watching our tester dogs.

Give them the freedom to work things out for themselves and you begin to see that every dog has their own way of solving the problem.

Koji was wonderfully methodical.

Finn showed us just how much of his body could become involved in a search.

Jess decided toys were considerably more interesting than my plans. 😂

And Dougie?

Dougie swept. And swept. And swept again.

Until he was satisfied there was absolutely NOTHING worth eating left behind. 😂🐾

**Before we ask for motorway-level skills, we need to practise on the quiet roads.** 🚗🐾

Meet the utterly gorgeous Eddie!

Eddie is a 15-week-old German Shepherd puppy with an enormous personality, a wonderfully clever brain and the sweetest little head tilt whenever he’s thinking. 💛

Like many puppies - particularly movement-loving herding breeds - Eddie can find busy people and exciting arrivals almost impossible to resist. When that puppy excitement takes over, jumping and mouthing soon follow.

He isn’t being naughty.

He’s a teething baby who explores with his mouth, hasn’t developed his own brakes yet and needs help bringing himself back down.

During our session, we explored how to build calm skills *before* expecting Eddie to use them around big distractions.

Someone at the door will gradually become Eddie’s signal to move away from the excitement, settle in his special place and discover that fabulous treats, sniffing activities and long-lasting chews appear there.

But we don’t begin with a real visitor bursting through the door - that’s the motorway!

We begin with the easiest possible version: perhaps a quiet recording of a knock, nobody arriving and Eddie learning the new pattern without all the excitement. Only when that feels easy do we add the next little challenge.

Eddie also showed us how quickly he learns. He readily offered a beautiful sit without being asked and thoroughly enjoyed practising eye contact and nose targeting.

If you have your puppy’s eyes, you’re far more likely to have their ears too. 😊

His family now has a lovely daily challenge: set aside 30 pieces of Eddie’s food and find **30 things they catch him doing right**.

Four paws on the floor? Reward it.
Choosing his own chew? Reward it.
Looking towards his humans? Reward it.
Settling quietly? Absolutely reward it!

Because what gets reinforced gets repeated - and puppies learn far more from being shown what *does* work than constantly being told what doesn’t.

Eddie doesn’t need endless physical exercise while his body is still growing. His clever shepherd brain needs thoughtful little challenges, sniffing, licking, chewing, plenty of sleep - and humans who help him find his brakes.

What a gorgeous, bright and thoroughly fabulous puppy he is. I can’t wait to see what that clever little head tilt helps him figure out next! 💛

**Bull breeds rarely need help finding the accelerator.**

They need us to help them discover the brakes. 💛

I’ve shared my life with Bull breeds - primarily Boxers - for more than 25 years.

So, when somebody tells me their dog:

🐾 Jumps up at visitors
🐾 Grabs sleeves or mouths arms
🐾 Launches their entire body at people
🐾 Becomes more frantic every time somebody says “No!”
🐾 Travels from apparently calm to completely bananas in seconds

Believe me…I feel their pain. 😂

Bull breeds often live life with their whole bodies.

They don’t just greet you - they attempt to climb inside your skin.

They don’t merely become excited - they explode.

And when all that enthusiasm is wrapped in muscle, jumping and mouthing can quickly become painful, frightening and impossible to ignore.

But these dogs usually don’t need our help going **up**.

Fast movements, raised voices, pushing them away, grabbing collars and repeatedly telling them to get down can all add more movement, attention and energy to an already overflowing situation.

Even negative attention is still attention - and to a highly social dog, that can keep the party going.

What they need is help coming **down**.

That might mean:

🐾 Preparing before visitors enter, rather than reacting after the explosion
🐾 Offering an appropriate toy before their mouth finds a human
🐾 Using gates or barriers to create breathing space
🐾 Keeping voices, hands and bodies calm
🐾 Reinforcing four paws on the floor
🐾 Using sniffing, scattering and searching to bring arousal down
🐾 Building in pauses before they reach 100
🐾 Making sure an overtired dog gets enough rest

Most importantly, we need to practise calmness while the dog is still capable of being calm.

We cannot wait until they are ricocheting around the room, grabbing clothing and unable to think - and then expect a beautifully composed response to “sit”.

At 100, the thinking brain has left the building.

Our job is to notice 20…40…60…and help them change direction before they reach the top.

That doesn’t mean suppressing their fabulous personalities. I would never want to remove the joy, humour, enthusiasm or glorious ridiculousness that makes a Bull breed who they are.

We’re not trying to extinguish the fire.

We’re teaching them how to warm the room without burning the house down. 🔥😂

And no, they don’t need a firmer hand simply because they are powerful.

They need thoughtful management, appropriate outlets, well-timed reinforcement and humans who understand that underneath the muscles is often an incredibly sensitive dog with very big feelings.

I know living with these dogs can be exhausting.

I know what it’s like to love them fiercely while wondering why every greeting has to resemble a minor traffic accident.

And I know that change is possible.

We don’t need to battle their strength.

We need to help them learn something far more valuable:

**The best recall often happens before you call the dog.**

Last week, I spoke to somebody looking for help with their ex-free-roaming dog.

They had contacted several trainers and had been told that the only way to achieve a reliable recall with a dog like theirs was to use an e-collar.

I could confidently reassure them that this simply isn’t true - because I share my life with an ex-free-roaming dog who now has an excellent recall. No e-collar required.

Could an e-collar produce a dog who returns? Very possibly.

Might it appear to work more quickly? Perhaps.

But a faster response and the same outward behaviour aren’t necessarily the same outcome.

I chose the slower route. I got to know my girl. I learned her body language, her triggers and the tiny changes that tell me she has noticed something long before I can see it myself.

Dogs are rubbish at keeping secrets. 😂

A change in pace.
A lifted head.
A shift in posture.
Ears suddenly tuned in.
A nose catching information on the breeze.

Her body tells me when something is out there - and whether I need to recall her *now*, before chasing becomes the more rewarding option.

Have I always got it right? Absolutely not.

I have taken my eye off the ball, missed those early signs and watched her chase deer. That was my mistake - not evidence that she needed to experience pain or fear to become more obedient.

Those mistakes taught me to pay closer attention.

When my dogs are off lead, they have my full attention. If I can’t give them that, the lead goes back on. Better safe than sorry.

I’ve also had the absolute joy of being thoroughly trained by a Terrier: a fiercely independent little hunter who quickly taught me that if I wasn’t at the top of my game, he would be long gone!

He developed an impeccable recall too. Now that his sight and hearing have deteriorated, he remains on a long line - not because his training failed, but because he is far too precious to take unnecessary risks with.

A long line isn’t failure.
Management isn’t failure.
Choosing not to let your dog off lead on a particular day isn’t failure.

Reliable recall isn’t simply about teaching a word that overpowers every instinct. It is built through relationship, reinforcement, observation, timing and knowing when the situation is too difficult for your dog.

It means understanding that recall is a shared responsibility. Our dogs learn to return - and we learn when to call.

So, can notoriously independent, prey-driven or formerly free-roaming dogs develop a fantastic recall without an e-collar?

Yes. Absolutely.

It may require more time, thought and involvement from the human - but that journey teaches us something no piece of equipment ever could:

🐾👃 **When you give a Beagle a job for that nose… magic happens.**

Mantrailing Sunday yesterday brought us ALL the weather. 🌧️☀️

Pouring rain one minute, blazing sunshine the next - but Team Cara took it all in their stride.

Cara is an experienced trailer now, and watching this team work together is an absolute joy.

There’s a lovely partnership happening at both ends of that line.

Her human isn’t trying to steer her, hurry her or tell her where to go. Brilliant line handling gives Cara the time, space and freedom to work the scent picture for herself - to investigate, make decisions, change her mind, check again and ultimately solve the puzzle.

And Cara?

She absolutely SHINES. ✨

Nose engaged. Brain working. Human following.

It looks beautifully simple - but that comes from experience, trust and learning to work with the dog rather than trying to do the job for them.

A little disclaimer about the video… 😂

🎥 **It’s speeded up!**

We absolutely do NOT expect our humans to hurtle around behind their dogs at this speed. In fact, we encourage quite the opposite. Slowing down gives the dog time to process information and gives the handler time to read what is happening at the other end of the line.

And if dogs were allowed to sit down with an activities brochure and choose their own hobby?

I reckon something involving their nose would be VERY high on the list. 👃❤️

Dogs experience so much of their world through scent.

Mantrailing simply gives them an opportunity to take that incredible ability and run with it.

**From puppy pupil to full-blown teenager!** 💛

I recently had the absolute pleasure of seeing gorgeous Rosie and her family again. The last time I saw Rosie, she was attending our puppy classes. She’s now around 18 months old - and adolescence has well and truly arrived!

Rosie is a wonderfully friendly, good-natured social butterfly. She wants to explore, sniff, play and join every party she can find. Unfortunately, her humans have accidentally found themselves cast as the fun police - appearing whenever it’s time to put the lead back on or bring an adventure to an end!

Adolescent dogs may look grown-up, but their brains are still developing. Add hormones, growing confidence, breed-specific traits and a strong desire for adventure, and skills that once seemed solid can suddenly become rather… optional. 😂

Our session wasn’t about demanding more “obedience”. It was about showing Rosie that her humans can be part of the fun too.

We explored:

🐾 Using a long line to prevent unwanted habits being rehearsed
🐾 Making recall rewarding - without always ending the adventure
🐾 Bringing tuggy games and sniffing into walks
🐾 Creating little “islands” where dog and human enjoy activities together
🐾 Helping Rosie feel comfortable when her lead is clipped on
🐾 Reinforcing four paws on the floor without accidentally rewarding jumping

Rosie absolutely came alive when the fluffy tug toys appeared! A little chasing, capturing and tugging gave her a wonderful outlet - and showed us exactly how we can make engagement with her humans genuinely rewarding.

Because recall doesn’t have to mean marching formally back to someone’s side. Anything that brings your dog happily back into your space is a recall.

And walks don’t have to be humans at one end of the lead and dogs at the other. They can be shared adventures, filled with games, sniffing, connection and fun.

Rosie isn’t giving her family a hard time. She’s an enthusiastic teenager who is currently finding the world enormously exciting. With thoughtful management and a little imagination, her humans can stop being the fun police - and start joining the party. 💛

**Sometimes, the best way forward is to do a little less… beautifully.** 💜

Meet the utterly gorgeous Violet!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Violet and her lovely new family for a private training session. This beautiful young Spaniel-type girl has only recently arrived in her new home - and, while she has very clearly landed on her paws, she has an enormous amount of change to process.

Our session wasn’t about filling Violet’s head with commands. It was about helping her family understand the busy little brain behind that beautiful face.

We explored:

🐾 How thoughtful lead handling can reduce frustration
🐾 Why the lead should act as a seatbelt - not a steering wheel
🐾 Giving Violet time to sniff, watch and gather information
🐾 Recognising her “traffic lights” before excitement spills over
🐾 Why short, successful experiences can be more valuable than trying to do too much too soon

As a young working-breed girl, Violet certainly doesn’t need any help becoming more excited by the world! Our job is to help her slow down, process what she sees and learn that she doesn’t need to chase every pigeon or rush towards every interesting thing.

And that nose! Violet makes the most wonderful little sniffing noises and absolutely LOVES investigating. I have a feeling scent work could become the perfect outlet for her clever working-dog brain once she has had time to settle.

Violet is happy, social, inquisitive and full of potential. She doesn’t need to experience everything at once - she needs time, choice and thoughtful guidance from the humans who already adore her.

Sometimes, progress begins not by asking for more, but by slowing down enough to notice what our dogs are telling us. 💜
