🚶 Walking Group Volunteers Needed! 🌿

Would you like to help lead local walks for our BIGBOX members?

We're looking for friendly volunteers to become Walking Group Leaders. No previous experience is needed-we'll support you every step of the way.

As a volunteer, BIGBOX will provide:
✅ Walking Group Leader training course
✅ First Aid course
✅ Ongoing support to help you lead enjoyable local walks

This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community, meet new people, and encourage others to stay active while enjoying the outdoors.

Lifting heavy weights doesn’t directly burn fat, but it is one of the most effective ways to support long-term fat loss because it changes how your body uses energy and helps preserve muscle.

Here’s how it works:

1. Builds and preserves muscle

When you’re in a calorie deficit, your body can lose both fat and muscle. Heavy resistance training signals your body to hold onto muscle tissue. Maintaining muscle helps you stay stronger and keeps your metabolism higher than if you lost muscle.

2. Increases calorie burn

A heavy strength session burns calories during the workout. It also creates an “afterburn effect” (known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC), where your body continues to use extra energy for several hours after training as it repairs muscle.

3. Improves body composition

Even if the scales don’t change dramatically, lifting heavy can reduce body fat while increasing or maintaining lean muscle. This often results in a leaner, more toned appearance.

4. Improves insulin sensitivity

Strength training helps your muscles become better at storing and using glucose. This can improve blood sugar control and reduce the likelihood of excess calories being stored as fat.

5. Increases daily energy expenditure

As you get stronger, everyday activities become easier and you’re often able to move more throughout the day, increasing your overall calorie expenditure.

What does “heavy” mean?

Heavy doesn’t necessarily mean lifting the heaviest weight possible. It means choosing a weight that:

* Allows good technique.
* Feels challenging for the final 2–3 repetitions.
* Leaves you with about 1–3 repetitions “in reserve” before failure.
* Is typically around 6–12 repetitions for muscle growth, although sets of 3–6 repetitions can also build strength effectively.

For the best fat-loss results

Combine:

* Strength training 3–4 times per week focusing on compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, and lunges.
* A small calorie deficit through nutrition.
* High protein intake (around 1.6–2.2 g per kg of body weight per day).
* Regular walking or other cardiovascular exercise.
* Adequate sleep and
