🥊Horsham Boxing Club Awards Evening 🥊

A huge thank you to Raylands Caravan Park for hosting our annual awards evening. It was fantastic to see so many people come together to celebrate the achievements, hard work and progress of our boxers over the past season.

The evening was particularly poignant as we remembered John Essex, who dedicated 40 years to Horsham Boxing Club. John’s passing has been deeply felt by everyone connected with the club, and he will be forever missed.

We know John would have been incredibly proud to see these awards presented to such talented young boxers.

In John’s memory, we were honoured to introduce the John Essex Shield, awarded for Bout of the Season.

Massive congratulations to Marco Fatehnia on winning the Ringside Box Cup for the second year running! 🥊

Marco also took home the Best Male Youth Boxer award for the second consecutive year.

After a dominant technical stoppage in Saturday's semi-final, Marco dug deep in Sunday's final. With the fight in the balance heading into the last round, relentless pressure and body shots forced three counts and secured another TKO victory to retain his title.

A brilliant weekend of boxing. Well done Marco – you've done yourself, your family and the club proud 🥊

Boxing club fundraises for gym extension in memory of 'inspirational' coach Horsham Amateur Boxing Club is raising funds for a long-awaited gym extension in honour of John Essex, who died on May 29 after a lengthy battle…

Important information

Friends and family are invited to meet at Worthing Crematorium ahead of a 1pm service on Wednesday 8th July, followed by a celebration of John's life at The Lintott, Southwater from 2.30pm.

If you're able to, please wear a Horsham Boxing Club t-shirt or tracksuit — it would mean a lot to see so many of them in the room. If you'd like to get one for the day, please DM us and we'll order one for you.

It is with profound sadness that Horsham Boxing Club announces the passing of a founder and long-standing coach, John Essex, who left us on Friday 29th May after battling cancer with the same courage and strength he instilled in every boxer who walked through our doors.

John's connection to this club spanned over 40 years, four decades of dedication, sacrifice, and belief in the power of boxing to change lives. He was there at the beginning, and his fingerprints are on everything the club is today.

He oversaw the club's move to its current home in Horsham Park, nurturing young talent from the age of 10 all the way through to the professional ranks. More recently, seeing one of our own crowned as a national amateur champion and go on to represent England.

Our thoughts at this time are with his family and we know the club is in good hands with his son Danny.

John, thank you. The club you built will carry your name and your honour in everything we do, in every bout, in every training session, and in every young person whose life is changed by stepping into this gym.

Horsham Boxing Club

Alfie, Frankie and Freddie travelled to Caturbury to compete on the City Boxing show last night.

Alfie boxed beautifully in a skills rematch and showed that he's ready to progress.

Freddie also had a rematch from last week's home show and suffered a repeat of a 3-2 split loss against a bigger and heavier opponent. He showed he was the stronger of the two despite the weight difference but just didn't do enough to force the win. Onto the next one!

Finally, Frankie had his first bout and showed class that defied this. The referee asked the crowd for an extra loud applause for the two boxers who didn't look like first bouters! Coaches thought Frankie had done enough to win but the judges disagreed and gave a points win the other way. He can be proud of his performance and moves on. HBC 🥊

An exceptional day for Horsham yesterday with Marco and Red collecting best Junior male and female boxing awards for Sussex last season, coupled with Archie taking a commanding win in the Sussex vs Hampshire rep match. 🙌

All hosted at the show in Portslade.
