Another drill to practice when you are looking to trial the jack.

Another drill to practice when you are looking to trial the jack.

🎯 TRAIL THE JACK β€” DRAW WITH PURPOSE!

A trail is a draw with a little extra weight. The goal? Kiss the jack and move it back β€” not smash it, not miss it! πŸ˜„

Think: β€œDraw through the jack to a spot behind it.”

πŸ‘‡πŸ»THE DRILL

You’ll need: β€’ 4 bowls
β€’ 1 mat
β€’ 1 jack
β€’ 1 spare bowl or marker as your receiving target

Place the jack on the centre line, with your marker 1–2 mat lengths behind it.

Then: ➑️ Use your normal draw routine
➑️ Add a little extra weight
➑️ Aim to hit the jack full in the face
➑️ The jack should travel towards your receiving target
➑️ Play 2 forehand + 2 backhand
➑️ Reset and repeat
➑️ Try 6 ends = 24 bowls

πŸ† SCORE YOUR TRAILS

πŸ₯‡ 3 points β€” Jack reaches the target zone and your bowl stays counting
πŸ₯ˆ 2 points β€” Jack moves back, but falls short of the target
πŸ₯‰ 1 point β€” You touch the jack but barely move it
β• 0 points β€” Miss, or lose control into the ditch

Trail shots take practice. One clean trail in five is still a shot worth celebrating! πŸ‘

Keep the draw line. Change the weight. Trust the delivery.

KISS IT. MOVE IT. COUNT IT. πŸ’›

Worth a read
It shows you:
β€’ Which hand needs more work
β€’ Which lengths challenge you
β€’ Where you're consistently missing
β€’ Whether your practice is actually paying off

🎯DRAW DRILL - 40 BOWLS. ONE JACK. ZERO EXCUSES.

The draw drill that tells you the truth… politely. πŸ˜„

New to the green? Welcome!

The 40-Bowl Draw Drill is one of the simplest ways to test your line, length and consistency β€” without taking yourself too seriously.

HOW IT WORKS:
πŸ₯£ 10 ends Γ— 4 bowls = 40 draws
🎯 Draw to short and long jacks
↔️ Play both forehand & backhand
πŸ“ Score 1 point if your bowl finishes within one mat length (about 60cm) of the jack.

Maximum score: 40

And remember β€” it's not about being perfect. Beginners celebrating 12–18 are doing just fine. Club regulars might chase 20–28, while the show-offs are hunting 30+! πŸ˜‰

Missed the jack? Be honest:
➑️ Narrow
➑️ Wide
➑️ Short
➑️ Long

WHY WE LOVE IT ❀️

It trains one of the most important shots in bowls β€” the draw.

It shows you:
β€’ Which hand needs more work
β€’ Which lengths challenge you
β€’ Where you're consistently missing
β€’ Whether your practice is actually paying off

And the best part? You can do it solo in around 45–60 minutes.

Warm up first. Keep your routine consistent. Watch every bowl right through to the stop. Change one thing at a time.

Then try to beat yesterday's score.

Because every bowl tells a story… and those short bowls?
They ALWAYS tell on you. πŸ˜‚

Struggling with adapting to different lengths try this drill.
Have a go see how you score.

🎯 SHORT. MEDIUM. LONG. β€” MASTER YOUR WEIGHT!

One delivery. Three different lengths. Three different weights.

If you find yourself bowling the same length every time, this drill is for you! πŸ˜„

πŸ‘πŸ» THE DRILL

Set up three jacks on the centre line: πŸ”Ή Short β€” minimum legal length
πŸ”Ή Medium β€” halfway down the rink
πŸ”Ή Long β€” near the far T / 2-metre mark

Then: ➑️ 2 bowls to short
➑️ 2 bowls to medium
➑️ 2 bowls to long
➑️ Repeat using the opposite hand

🎯 SCORING

1 point if your bowl finishes within one mat length (Β±60cm) of the jack.

24 bowls = 24 points maximum.

πŸ‘€ WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Too many short bowls? You may still be bowling medium in your head!

Always running through? You might be adding too much arm instead of making a controlled adjustment to your delivery.

Same routine. Same line. Change the weight.

Watch the bowl all the way to the stop β€” then adjust.

Because good weight control isn't about bowling harder…
it's about bowling smarter. πŸ’›

Where do you position your feet?
Simple solution which can have more consistency.

πŸ”₯🟒 NEW SERIES ALERT β€” AND THIS ONE STARTS FROM THE GROUND UP! 🟒πŸ”₯

We spend hours talking about line, weight, backswing, release and follow-through… but what if better consistency actually starts before the bowl even moves? πŸ‘€

Introducing our brand-new series:

πŸ‘£ LAWN BOWLS FOOT PLACEMENT

ONE LESS VARIABLE IN YOUR DELIVERY

Every time you step onto the mat, your feet create the foundation for what happens next. If that foundation keeps changing, you're asking your body to reproduce the same delivery from a different starting position every time.

🎯 Same setup.
πŸ‘Ÿ Same alignment.
πŸ” More repeatability.
🟒 One less variable to worry about.

Over this series, we're going to dig deeper into foot placement, alignment and consistency on the mat β€” not because there is one magical position that suits every bowler, but because understanding your own setup can help make your delivery far more repeatable.

πŸ’₯ CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLES!

And here's the question to kick off the series:

πŸ‘‡ When you step onto the mat, do you consciously place your feet in the same position every time β€” or have you never really thought about it?

Drop your answer in the comments. πŸ‘‡ I think this one could start a VERY interesting bowls discussion! 😁🟒
