Walking is underrated.

Whether its:

Brisk pace
Moderate pace
Treadmill incline
Hill walking
Dog walking

All share the fantastic health benefits of better heart health, better joint & bone health, better sleep, improved mental health, stronger legs & glutes & it burns calories.

But I have a couple of tips that will help you to get more from simply putting one foot in front of the other..

1. Add an incline & slow your pace 🚷

Set your treadmill to a 12% incline & choose a moderate pace 3mph (4.8kmph) for 30 minutes & you've got yourself a fairly demanding walking workout. And you'll be burning body fat.

2. Let go πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Don't grasp the treadmill handles like your life depends on it!
Let go & let your arms swing naturally by your side. Holding on significantly reduces the effective workload.

3. Walk after strength training πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

After lifting weights add a 20 - 30 minute moderate incline walk to increase your overall calorie burn, increase fat loss & it's also a great way to cool down & help to prevent muscle soreness.

4. Daily step count πŸ‘Ÿ

We've all heard about the recommended 10,000 steps a day. And this doesn't mean setting your fitness watch & walking it in one go like an aspiring Forest Gump!

10,000 steps is the equivalent to approximately 7 - 8km & getting those steps in every day will boost both your calorie burn & contribute to overall fat loss.

5. Need more of a challenge 🎯

Invest in a weighted jacket. If you are a seasoned walker, add a weighted vest to your walking workout. Start with a vest which weighs about 5% of your body weight & increase the work your legs & core have to do.

Don't choose the heaviest jacket you can find! You'll be surprised how that little extra weight can make a big difference.

And finally let me know how you will be getting your steps in this week, in the comments below.

Chrisy has only gone & done it..

Chrisy originally set herself a goal to leg press 200kg.

Then I set her a goal to leg press 250kg by 1 October.

Today she pressed 250kg with ease.

The trick I've found is not to tell her how much weight is actually loaded on the machine... poker face. πŸ˜…

Well done Chrisy, a huge milestone - I knew you could do it - thank you for trusting me to push you past what you think are your limits.

Amazing achievement πŸ‘πŸ»

Hayley has a super busy schedule. She works full-time Monday to Friday, as well as being Mum to her energetic kids. She rarely has time to herself - but her body is now telling her it needs looking after too.

Hayley has a trapped nerve in her back, neck & shoulder pain caused by extreme tension, bursitis in her hip & carpel tunnel syndrome.

These are all signs that her body needs to move more, especially as she needs to protect her muscle mass & bone strength in perimenopause.

Today, we went through a simple assessment to gauge where Hayley is at, & from that I've developed an 8 week plan, focussing on strength training, mobility & cardio.

The aim - to build Hayley's confidence in the gym, build strength & get her moving over time with less discomfort.

Welcome to the Liz Shore Fitness team, Hayley. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve over the coming weeks!

Believe me I've heard it all.

Even the most demure client has been reduced to a few choice 'workout words' on the ninth rep of leg extensions.

But... I don't take it personally.

Then my client will reach the end of the session, smash a PB or hit their goal & suddenly its:

'Oh my goodness.'

'I can't believe I did that.'

'It was worth it.'

'That was amazing. I enjoyed that.'

Funny how the 'workout words' completely disappear when the progress arrives. πŸ˜…

And that's the bit I want my clients to remember.

So, this week, if it helps, use your 'workout words' but don't forget to use the same enthusiasm to congratulate yourself with your achievements.

Jill & I were in the gym this morning & we got a little nostalgic πŸ’

When I started training Jill, just over two years ago, she was early 70s, 117kg, attending a weekly breathing rehabilitation course, she became out of breath very quickly with movement & her mobility itself, was limited & unsteady.

Jill had a dream trip to India coming up & her goal was to be able to squat in case the local facilities required her to. Yes, really! We got her squatting in time, thank goodness. 🧻

I remember standing in her lounge as she picked up 2.5kg dumbbells, which at the time she thought was heavy.

Today, mid 70s, she stood in front of me, in the gym & completed three sets of 20 sumo squat pulses with a 16kg dumbbell.

After losing 12kg naturally, Jill decided she needed a little more help with weight loss, & after much consideration started the weight loss jab in March 2025.

Jill was sensible, she began eating smaller portions, choosing healthier options & she continued strength training to ensure she maintained her muscle & protected her bone density. These new habits have become her lifestyle.

Jill has been off the jab since July this year & has now lost a staggering 44kg in total. That's the equivalent of an Alpaca or an average 12 year old child.

Jill feels stronger & fitter than ever. Lifting, squatting, pulling & pushing her way through session after session. Jill has even started salsa classes. πŸ’ƒπŸΌ

Jill's mental health has also improved - she has gone back to creating art & dancing, two things she absolutely loves. She's even started cooking, something she never enjoyed or classed herself as being good at. πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ³ Now she's a quiche queen.

Jill, your transformation is inspirational.

The journey hasn't been without its challenges but you kept going, kept showing up - all credit to you. ⭐️

285.7kg. And Kate had more in the tank. πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Today, Kate leg pressed an impressive 285.7kg - & the best part? She wasn't at her limit. There was still more there.

But this isn't just about one big number.

Kate is now in her 5th block of six week programmes, with each block building progressively on the one before it. That kind of progress doesn't happen by accident. It comes from showing up, putting the work in, trusting the process & being consistent.

And Kate brings something else to every session that you can't write into a programme - enthusiasm & positivity.

Her journey back to strength has been possible through her determination, consistency & a can do attitude.

And she's feeling the benefits too, with slow & steady weight loss & in her own words 'my muscles in my thighs are harder'.

I'm not surprised! Well done Kate! πŸ‘πŸ»

Since Fiona got back from holiday, she has found it difficult to get properly back into healthy habits. Or she feels like she has...

We've all been there, week in week out, eating well, ticking off the gym sessions, step count on point, feeling stronger, inches dropping & lbs down.

Then we take off into the clouds with all good intentions, yoghurt & fruits from the breakfast bar & we even join in with that early yoga class by the pool.

Out of our usual routine, no work or responsibilities, we relax - the ch*****ne at the breakfast bar & vast array of mini deserts lure us in.

Of course it does. We're human. And holidays are meant to be enjoyed. The problem isn't the holiday.

We return home, a few lbs heavier & convince ourself we've ruined all our progress & we need to start again.

Not the case.

Fiona hadn't failed, she hadn't undone months of progress, she just needed to get back into her routine.

No crash dieting, no punishing workouts or trying to burn off the ch*****ne breakfasts.

Just simple, consistent, familiar habits, one day at a time:

β€’ A decent breakfast
β€’ Getting her step count up
β€’ Planning her meals
β€’ Getting back into the gym
β€’ Drinking more water

And most importantly giving herself a bit of grace while she found her rhythm again.

A few weeks on she's lbs down, focussed on her calorie & protein goal & has never missed a gym session.

And to her surprise, when she packed away her bikinis & started going through her Autumn Winter wardrobe, her clothes actually felt baggy.

Fiona didn't need to start all over again, she just needed to keep going, & that's exactly what she's done.

Taking weight-loss jabs, of perimenopausal or menopausal age & feeling rough when you train in the gym?

There may be more going on than you think…

If you're taking medications such as Wegovy, Mounjaro or Ozempic, & you've ever felt suddenly sick, dizzy, weak, headachy, clammy or completely wiped out during a gym session - it's worth understanding what's happening inside your body.

These medications can create a situation where your body has less tolerance to heat*.

GLP-1 medicines can significantly reduce appetite, meaning some people may unintentionally eat less than they need, leaving them under-fuelled for a gym workout.

What many also don't realise is that as well as reducing appetite by switching off hunger receptors - the medication also switches of your thirst receptors resulting in you drinking less fluids. This means you are more likely to be dehydrated before you even set foot in the gym.

πŸ‹οΈ Then you add exercise

Your working muscles produce heat. To get rid of that heat, your body sends more blood towards the skin & you start sweating. Your heart is also working harder to keep blood circulating.

🌑️ Now add a humid environment & menopausal hot flushes..

You're producing more heat, sweating more & potentially losing more fluid.

Your blood volume drops as you lose fluid, your heart has to work harder, your blood pressure drops & your ability to cope with the heat & exercise can be reduced. Your body becomes overwhelmed.

I have seen it first hand with my a couple of my own clients - mid session - overheating, overwhelming nausea, dizzy, feeling clammy - & we have to stop.

So how can you reduce the risk?

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated throughout the day.
🍽️ Don't routinely train completely under-fuelled. Small snacks.
πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Adjust your training intensity in hot environments.
πŸ‘• Wear materials which will keep you cool in the gym.
🌑️ Take cooling breaks.
πŸ₯€ Consider taking on board some electrolytes.
🚨 And most importantly - don't try to push through symptoms.

Stop exercising, get somewhere cool & rehydrate if you can.

Weight-loss medication can be a useful tool - but it doesn't remove the need to fuel, hydrate, recover & listen to your body.

Your body is still doing the same job of regulating temperature, maintaining blood circulation & keeping you safe during exercise.

The trick is making sure you give it the extra resources it needs to do that - even when it doesn't prompt you.

What do you want your life to feel like if everything is possible?

Not what do you want to weigh.
Not what size do you want to be.
Not what do you want to look like in the mirror.

What do you want your life to 'feel' like?

Free?
Spontaneous?
Adventurous?
Capable?
Full?

With consistency, discipline & time you can change your body, change your size, hit that number on the scale - that's the physical change, & it usually starts in the gym.

Over time, however, something else happens outside the numbers.

It's my role as a personal trainer, to help my clients realise everything is possible.

Freedom - to move through your day without constantly thinking about what your body can or can't do.

Spontaneity - to say 'yes' without having to plan or worry if you'll keep up with others.

Adventure - book the trip, take a hike, because your body no longer feels like the reason not to.

Capability - to do things automatically without thinking 'I don't think my body can do that'.

Live a full life - with new found energy & confidence.

So when I ask you, what do you want your life to feel like?

What would you say if everything is possible?
