WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT BUNKERS

This came up in the Captain’s report to the Men’s Committee on 1 September and it’s worth sharing with everyone.
Not because we want to have a moan about bunkers… we’ve all been in one and wished we hadn’t!
But because the condition we leave them in matters to the next person playing behind us.

This was the Captain’s comment, exactly as it appeared in the minutes:

“My only negative comment from visiting teams & from others is the condition that some of our members are leaving our bunkers, please ensure you rake the bunker after your visit, pushing the sand back towards the centre of the bunker as you exit, nobody enjoys going into the bunkers, but is becoming more frustrating when the bunker is left in very poor condition with footprints & lumps of sand left at the entrance - prime examples of this was seen on club champs Saturday, so we cannot look to blame any visitors or societies. IT IS US THE MEMBERS THAT HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY - Thank You.”

And he’s right.

We know nobody sets out to leave a bunker in poor condition. Sometimes you’re thinking about the next shot, sometimes you’re concentrating on getting out and sometimes you just forget.
But taking a few seconds to rake the bunker properly makes a big difference.
So next time you find yourself in the sand, please rake it, push the sand back towards the centre as you leave and smooth out your footprints.
It’s a small thing, but it’s part of looking after our course and making sure the next person gets the same chance you did.
We’re all responsible for Wrag Barn, and that includes the bunkers. 🏌️‍♀️🏌️‍♂️

I make no apology for asking my AI friend to come up with this ditty - these guys work hard behind the scenes and this is an opportunity to say…

🌱

Before the first golfer steps onto the tee,
There’s a dedicated team behind what we see.

Nobby leads, with Jack by his side,
Harry, Sam and Rhys bring skill and pride.

With Tim helping out along the way,
They keep Wrag Barn looking its best every day.

From dawn until dusk, whatever the weather,
They work to keep our course looking better.

So today, we’re delighted to say,
Thank you, greenkeepers—you’re brilliant every day. 🌱⛳

From Wrag Barn to the England Golf Club Championships ⛳️

Following their win in the Wiltshire County Championships, our Wrag Barn team earned the opportunity to represent Wiltshire at the England Golf Club Championships in Felixstowe.

Ellie Webster was part of our winning County team but, having returned to university in America, was unable to make the trip to the National Championship. Lauren Hulston stepped in alongside Olivia Bannon and Serena Masters to take on the two-day competition.

Day 1 brought some seriously challenging weather and, as Lauren put it, the team were pretty much beaten up by it. But they bounced back on day 2 and showed some really good golf, proving that Wrag Barn could compete with some very well established clubs and exceptional golfers.

The full England Golf set-up made it a fantastic experience and one that the girls will remember for a long time.

Lauren summed it up perfectly afterwards:

“It was amazing. I’d seriously advertise this as an incentive to players when it comes to the County Champs.”

Although she did add that she was quite happy to keep it as a best kept secret so Wrag can win again.

We couldn’t agree more.

A huge thank you to Lauren, Olivia and Serena for representing Wrag Barn and to Wiltshire Golf for the support in getting the team to the National Championship.

And a special mention to Ellie, whose part in winning the County Championship got them there in the first place.

A brilliant achievement and a great experience for the girls. ⛳️

Club Championship 2026

A dramatic finish to the Club Championship!

Louis McDiarmid and Guy Drayton both finished on 147, meaning the Championship had to be decided by a play-off.

Louis had always said he would embrace the prospect of a play-off. But after bogeying the 18th while Guy birdied it to force the tie, the reality proved rather more stressful!

They played 14/18 until Louis finally sunk the winning putt on the 18th to take the hole and the Championship.

The result was exciting, but what was even better was the spirit in which the play-off was played. Guy was gracious in defeat and Louis humble in victory.

Congratulations to both of them.

There were some fantastic performances throughout the Championship too.

Olivia Bannon led overnight after a brilliant 71 gross on day one, with Lauren Hulston playing on day one and then doing a great job as caddy on day two.

The Perry family also featured prominently, with Stanley taking second net on day one, Ted finishing second net overall and Simon taking third gross overall.

And a special mention for John Guy, whose two rounds of 68 net secured the overall net title.

There were also strong performances further down the field, with Richard Horbunowicz rounding out the overall net podium in third place on countback after finishing level on 138.

🏆 Overall Gross
🥇 Louis McDiarmid – 147, play-off winner
🥈 Guy Drayton – 147
🥉 Simon Perry – 152

🏆 Overall Nett
🥇 John Guy – 136
🥈 Ted Perry – 138
🥉 Richard Horbunowicz – 138 CB

Thank you to everyone who made the Championship possible – the team collecting cards and collating scores, our F&B team for keeping everyone fed and watered, and our greenkeepers for keeping the course playable in such dry conditions.
Huge gratitude to Akers Developments Limited who sponsored the event

Congratulations to everyone who took part. ⛳️

📮 Postcards from Junior Presentation Night – Part 2

Our Cadet section is something very special. It’s built on friendship, family and a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers who give so much of their time to help our youngest golfers enjoy the game and develop their skills.

Congratulations to our Cadet Champion, Jacob Scarrott, who at just 10 years old produced a remarkable performance by parring the front nine from the red tees. An outstanding achievement and one that reflects all the hard work he has put into his golf.

Congratulations to every cadet who took part and achieved so much throughout the week. Watching your confidence grow, your friendships develop and your love of the game flourish is what Junior Week is all about.

Finally, a huge thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers. Your enthusiasm, patience and commitment make all of this possible, and the Cadet section is thriving because of everything you do. 👏⛳️
