Your child doesn’t always need to be the fastest player on the pitch.

Sometimes they just need to be quicker over the first few steps. 🚀

When we think of speed, it’s easy to picture somebody sprinting flat out over 30m, 40m or 100m.

But think about what actually happens in most youth sports.

⚽ A footballer reacting to a loose ball.

🏉 A rugby player accelerating through a gap.

🏒 An ice hockey player trying to get separation.

🎾 A tennis player moving towards the next ball.

Often, the important bit happens within the first few metres.

That’s why acceleration is such a big part of what we teach at Hull Speed Academy.

We’re trying to help young athletes learn how to get their body moving quickly, apply force into the ground and accelerate effectively.

Top speed still matters, and we train that too.

But if your child is constantly half a step behind, improving those first few steps could make a big difference.

Parents — is your child always half a step behind? 👀

If your child regularly gets beaten to the ball, puck, opponent or into space, it’s easy to assume:

“They’re just not very fast.”

But that isn’t necessarily the case.

One of the first things we look at is their acceleration.

In sports such as football, rugby, ice hockey and tennis, young athletes are constantly having to accelerate over short distances.

They don’t always have the time or space to reach their maximum speed.

That’s why those first few steps matter.

Good acceleration isn’t simply about moving the legs faster.

We want young athletes to learn how to:

🚀 Push themselves forwards with each step

🧨 Apply force backwards into the ground

🏃 Drive their body forwards effectively

⚡️Accelerate quickly over the first few metres

That’s why at Hull Speed Academy you’ll hear us use simple coaching cues such as:

“Push the ground away.”

“Big shapes.”

The aim is to help young athletes understand how to move effectively without overwhelming them with complicated coaching language.

So if your child looks quick once they’re moving but struggles over the first few metres, don’t immediately think that they are them “slow.”

Their acceleration might simply need developing. 🚀

Parents — fast feet don’t necessarily mean a fast child 👀

One of the biggest misconceptions around youth speed training is that moving the feet quickly automatically means an athlete is getting faster.

There’s nothing wrong with ladders or fast feet drills.

They can be great fun, challenge coordination and be an enjoyable part of a young athlete’s training.

But that doesn’t necessarily make them speed training.

Ultimately, speed is about moving the whole body from one place to another as quickly as possible — what we might describe as moving the athlete’s centre of mass.

To do that effectively, young athletes need to learn how to apply force into the ground and produce movements that actually propel their body forwards.

That’s why at Hull Speed Academy our speed development includes:

🚀 Sprinting & acceleration

🧨 Jumping & power

💪 Age appropriate strength training

🔁 Regular exposure to moving FAST

So by all means use ladders and fast feet games if your child enjoys them.

Just remember:

Moving your feet quickly doesn’t mean you’re moving your body quickly.

Save this if your child wants to get faster.

Parents, your child can train several times every week and still not actually be training speed.

At Hull Speed Academy in Hull & East Riding, we help young athletes aged 10–16 develop the physical qualities that underpin sporting performance:

🚀 Speed & acceleration

↔️ Agility & change of direction

🧨 Jumping & power

💪 Age appropriate strength

Whatever sport they play, becoming a better athlete can help them perform it.

Does your child actually do dedicated speed training?

One year of Hull Speed Academy 🚀

As I head off on holiday, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the last 12 months and, most importantly, say thank you.

Thank you to every young athlete I’ve had the privilege of coaching, and to every parent who has trusted me with their child’s training. 🙏🏻

12 months ago, I made the decision to rebrand as Hull Speed Academy, with the aim of helping more young athletes across Hull and the East Riding become faster, stronger and more confident in their sport.

One year later, we’ve:

🚀 Grown from around 300 followers to nearly 1,000

🏃 Added another Monday Academy session

💪 Started more small group speed and strength sessions

🏒 Worked with ice hockey camps at both local and national level

🏫 Launched our Schools Community Programme

🏅 Continued working with talented young athletes across football, rugby, tennis, ice hockey and more

It’s been an amazing first year — and we’re only getting started.

While I’m away, our Monday and Friday Academy sessions will continue as normal with our brilliant coaches, so the hard work doesn’t stop! 💪🚀

Finally, to everyone who has liked, commented, shared or reposted our content over the last 12 months, thank you.

Every bit of support has helped Hull Speed Academy grow and allowed us to reach more young athletes and parents across Hull and the East Riding.

I’m incredibly excited to see where the next 12 months take us. 🚀

Thank you for being part of the journey.

Chris
