Fartlek means speed-play in Swedish and can be any workout where you run different paces. It can be structured like the one here, or more informal by using trees or electric poles as markers. Again you can have a prescribed pace, or mix it up.
Doing various paces can help make you stronger in any race you want to do. Helping you get used to changing paces around you. It can also help when training for a distance with some faster than target pace work.
It is important to stick to the paces and do all the intervals at the same pace. Don't be tempted to go too fast and hang on. Intervals build more fitness when done at a consistent pace.
Adding this workout in to your plan once every two weeks or so is a great way to mix up your training.

Progress isn't always faster, sometimes it's simply further, stronger or more consistent!
Speed isn't the perfect measure of how good we are. Measure you self in a way that means something to you.
If you have been struggling to get out running, and you managed to go out however many times a week for a few weeks - that is progress.
Furthest you've run is 5k and you did 6k - that is progress.
Finish your run and normally need an hour to recover, but you're good to go in half an hour - that is progress.
Huge emphasis is put on PB's and running pace and you can absolutely strive to get quicker, but it's not the be all and end all.
Look at your overall running journey and recognise any progress you make in all areas. Recognising progress really helps us keep going.

Don't try and catch up missed runs or sessions!
Life can be unpredictable with events, work, illness and injury. If you are following a plan you don't need to worry or panic. One run doesn't make a training plan.
It's rare that anyone manages to follow any training plan 100%. From pro's down to beginners.
If we try and squeeze the missed run in we risk many things. We could injure ourselves from putting hard sessions too close together, we could mentally tire ourselves out from the pressure.
Doing 95% of a plan at 100% is better than doing 100% at 95%.
Give yourself a break, look at what you have done, not what you haven't.

Wednesday Workout this week is a Hill Session.
Hills build strength and endurance, finding routes with hills in for our day to day training can help as long as we don't go too hard up them.
A dedicated hill session is a chance to push it up a hill. Working to a perceived effort of 7-8 of of ten for the 60 seconds is really important. But the recovery down is just as important so you are ready to go again at the bottom is vital.
Find a hill that you are able to keep going up for the whole 60 seconds. As you get stronger you may need to find a steeper or longer hill.
Doing this either once a week or in a rotation with other workouts can really improve your running strength.

Your pace doesn't define you. Your journey does.
There is so much noise out there in the running community.
'You're not a runner if you walk' 'You need to run a certain pace' 'x min/miles is so slow'
All of this is rubbish, your running journey is yours with it's own destination.
Whatever your target, whatever you want to achieve is totally valid.
And that road can be twisty and turny and even go backwards sometimes. That is ok!
As long as it is your journey, as long it is what you want, that is what matters.
Be the runner you want to be, not the runner you think you should be.

Want to make sur those easy runs are genuinely easy?
Cover the watch, turn off lap notifications and run to feel.
How do I run to feel? Is an important question.
Answer - Run so your breathing is under control, you can have a conversation (It might be weird, but I talk out loud to myself to test this when I'm on my own)
But that means I'm nearly walking!
That's ok! It's more than ok, it's where we're at. We need to take the ego out of easy runs. They are there to build aerobic capacity, recovery and fitness. whether it's an 8 minute mile or a 13 minute mile as long as it's easy for you it's doing what it should.
Not running easy enough is one of the most common mistakes runners make.
Give it a go and let me know how you get on in the comments

Beginner Run
This can be used if you have never run before and adapted as you go along.
One of the biggest motivation killers when people start running is that they try and run continuously when they start. This can feel incredibly hard and make us feel like we can't do it, so we stop.
Starting with this workout, then slowly increasing the number of reps first, then the running time is a great way to start and get us going. Eventually you can reduce the walking time until you feel ready for a continuous run.
I can also coach you from a non runner to the level you want to get to, step by step, either a plan to follow or monthly coaching.
Or just follow along for more workouts, motivation and tips -
