🎾 2026 League Season - that’s a wrap!
Another summer league season completed for Hemingfords Lawn Tennis Club, with eight teams representing the club across the Huntingdon & Peterborough leagues.
There were plenty of wins, a few hard fought draws, some tough evenings on court and one promotion to celebrate!
⬆️ Women’s B finished 2nd in Division 3 and are PROMOTED! A brilliant season with four wins from six matches.
Our Men’s A, Men’s B, Men’s C, Women’s A, Mixed A and Mixed B teams all secured their places in their respective divisions for next season, while Mixed C will drop down a division.
The competitive tennis doesn’t stop for winter! For the first time, we’re entering the Cambridgeshire Winter Leagues, with one Men’s, one Ladies’ and one Mixed team. As we’re new to the league, all three will be starting out in the lowest divisions - venturing into the unknown!
A big thank you to everyone who played this season and particularly to the captains for organising teams, chasing availability and making sure we managed to put sides out week after week! Well done!!

🎾 This week's match round-up! 🎾
Another busy week for the club with plenty of competitive tennis across the teams.

🎾 Men's C were first in action on Tuesday evening with an away trip to Papworth A. Chris & Jon teamed up once again, while Vernon partnered Piero. It was a tough evening against strong opposition, with the team going down 7-1. The consolation set came from Vernon and Piero, who got off to a flying start by taking their opening set.

Wednesday saw our Women's A team play their first match of the season at home against City of Peterborough B. Helen & Babs made a fantastic start, comfortably winning both of their sets against the first pair. Meanwhile, on the neighbouring court, Fi & Harriet certainly covered every inch of it - it's safe to say they won the running race! After a first set packed with deuces and ending in a tie-break, they were unlucky not to come away with a set and narrowly lost both.
Against the second pair, Helen & Babs were involved in some incredibly close rallies, with the scoreline not really reflecting just how competitive those sets were. Fi & Harriet bounced back to take the first set against their second opponents before the momentum slipped away in the second. The final result was a 5-3 loss, but a special mention goes to Harriet, who put in an outstanding performance throughout the evening. 👏

🔥 Thursday saw the Men's A team away against City of Peterborough C. James & Dougie were in superb form, producing a flawless display to win all four of their sets. 👏 Ben & Howie got off to a winning start by taking their opening set but couldn't quite recreate the magic in the remaining matches. Their efforts helped secure an excellent 5-3 victory for the team.
The Men's B team were due to travel to Ramsay, but the match has been postponed and will be played at a later date.

🎾 NEW INDIVIDUAL COACHING OPPORTUNITY AT THE CLUB

We're excited to share that John Fabisz will now be running 1:1 coaching sessions at the club. Formerly, John was a head coach at Needingworth for 10 years before leaving the area. Currently LTA Level 2 qualified, having previously attended the LTA Development Coach Award. John has representing Cambridgeshire County Senior teams and captained Hunts & Peterborough, Cambs and Norfolk league teams. Having now returned to the area, John is playing regularly at the club and is excited to help players improve their tennis game. Open to both members and non-members. 🎾 A slightly belated round-up of our matches from the week beginning 29th June! 🎾
It may be a little later than planned, but here's how our teams got on...
Men's B were the first men's team in action, taking on City of Peterborough B. Howie & John Radford, alongside Chip & Matt, put in a great performance to secure a 5-3 victory. Although Howie and John were pushed to a tie-break in one set, they came through it and won their remaining sets comfortably to help the team to an excellent win.
Men's A travelled to Deeping, with James & Dougie and Piero & Ben representing the club. Both pairs picked up a set against Deeping's first pairing before James and Dougie produced a strong finish, winning both of their sets against the second pair to earn the team a hard-fought 4-4 draw.
😄 Men's C welcomed what can only be described as a very youthful Huntingdon B side. In fact, the combined ages of three of their players still didn't add up to David's age! Chris & Jon wrapped up their matches early enough to enjoy a well earned drink on the balcony while cheering on their teammates. Despite Tony & David pushing their opening set to a tie-break, they couldn't quite find a breakthrough, with Huntingdon taking the match.
🎾 Women's B were due to face Spalding, but unfortunately their opponents were unable to field a team, meaning the match was awarded as a walkover.

🎾 END OF SEASON ROUND UP OF MIXED TEAMS 🎾

Between last week and this, the Mixed C team has had THREE matches, thanks to rain postponing some matches earlier in the summer. The Mixed B team had just one last match to play which was an important one!

Last week started with Susan, Chris, Fi and Jon heading to Longthorpe Lawn Tennis Club to play their Mixed C team on Monday. It took a while for the team to get used to the surface and to the different balls with plenty of balls going out the back of the court. Jon and Fi got closer to a win in their last set but sadly the final score was a 0-8 loss.

Onto Wednesday and the same team welcomed Oundle Tennis Club B team at home. A match that had been postponed - not a raindrop to be seen this time around though! Oundle came with some nifty game play which the Hemingfords team found hard to respond to. Fi and Jon talked tactics after their 1st pair - which came good against their 2nd pair - taking those 2 sets 6-2, 6-3. The team came away with a 2-6 loss however, but enjoyed a drink with the opposition afterwards just as the England v Croatia game was kicking off in the Pavilion!

Friday came, and this time it was the Mixed B team travelling to City of Peterborough Tennis Club - inspire2coach to play their C team. Thanks to Dean for stepping in to fill the gap in the team; he once again paired up with Fi who also did a last minute stand in appearance! A hot one in Peterborough for the team which also included Derds and Kate. It was always going to be a tough one against the top of the division team - a good result would give our B team an almost certain promotion at the end of the season. The setting sun, hard courts and different balls made life difficult, but the persevered and came back stronger towards the end - but it was all too late sadly. Another 0-8 loss!

Onto this week, and it was the C team off to Wisbech Tennis Club last night to play their postponed match. Thanks to Susan who stepped in to replace Fi who now, according to league rules, couldn't play after the Friday B team match. Susan, Chris, Lesley and Jon needed the win if the C team were to have a chance of staying in the league. The artificial clay surface was always going to be a test for them. Sadly it was a 2-6 loss and likely demotion to Division 4.

The Mixed A team have completed all of their matches - they've finished 6th in Division 1. The B team are awaiting some other results to see if they can hold onto 2nd place in the division and a chance at promotion.

Now onto the Men's matches which begin next week starting with the B team playing at home on Monday!

🎾 Mixed Teams Round-Up From This Week 🎾
A busy night last night for our mixed teams, with Mixed A and Mixed C in action while Mixed B had an unexpected evening off!

Mixed A welcomed Buckden Tennis Club A to our courts. Ayla and James, alongside Becca and Howie, were involved in a closely fought match with several tight sets. Despite a strong effort and some excellent tennis, the team narrowly missed out on a draw, eventually losing 5-3.

Mixed C travelled to St Neots Lawn Tennis Club, where damp hard courts made for a tentative start! The lefties were split with David partnering Susan, whilst Fi teamed up with Chris. Plenty of games went to deuce, but adapting to the unfamiliar surface proved difficult. Chris and Fi finished strongly, taking the final set 6-3, but the team went down 7-1 overall.

Mixed B were due to play Wisbech this evening, but sadly the match has been cancelled as Wisbech can't field a team!

Onwards to the Stella tournament this weekend and the club BBQ - we look forward to seeing those of you who are able to attend there!

🎾This Week's Matches - Mixed B & Mixed C Teams!🎾

A busy evening of tennis last night saw our Mixed B and Mixed C teams in action, while unfortunately the weather had other ideas for the A Team.

Mixed B travelled to St Neots Lawn Tennis Club and came away on the wrong side of a closely fought 3-5 defeat. Tony and Kate battled hard throughout the evening but sadly won just one of their sets. SJ and Matt faced a difficult challenge on the end court by the wall. Despite some great rallies across the match, St Neots edged the match.

At home, Mixed C welcomed Ketton and earned a well deserved 4-4 draw. Chris partnered youngster Harriet, and the pair showed great determination to battle through and win their opening two sets before finding the next opposition pairing just too strong on the night. There were club debuts for both Jon and Lesley; the pair picked up a set against each opposing partnership, including a hard-fought tie-break victory, helping secure the draw for the team.

Unfortunately, the A Team's match against City of Peterborough was called off due to the rain and will be rearranged for a later date.

🎾 Two fantastic 7-1 victories for our Mixed teams last night! 🎾

Our Mixed A team welcomed David Lloyd Peterborough Mixed A to our home courts and produced a brilliant performance to secure a 7-1 win. James and Ayla were unstoppable, taking all four of their sets in style. Will and Helen also had a superb evening, only narrowly missing out on a clean sweep when the final set slipped away 4-6 - much to the confusion of Captain Helen, who was convinced they’d been ahead throughout the set! 😂

Meanwhile, the Mixed B team travelled to City of Peterborough Tennis Club - inspire2coach to face their Mixed D side.
Fi found herself in a re-match against one pair she had only faced last week, this time partnering with another Chris - better known as Chip! One of their funniest moments of the night came during a rally where the opposition smashed an incredible winner down the tramlines. Everyone on court (apart from Fi) assumed the point was over and started walking to the next point… only for Fi to somehow retrieve it on her backhand and place the ball perfectly between the opposition, who hadn’t even realised it had come back! Thankfully the supporters saw it all unfold and were left in fits of laughter! 😂
As the thunderstorms rolled in at half time, a decision had to be made with lightning approaching. Luckily, the break gave everyone time to move into the bubble and complete the match safely.
Piero and SJ continued their strong start and powered through to win all four of their sets. Fi and Chip cruised through the opening set against the second pair 6-1 and looked set to finish strongly when they raced into a 3-0 lead in the final set. But the opposition changed tactics and battled all the way back, forcing a tense tie-break. With the score at 5-6, Fi stepped up to serve… only for the set to end in the cruellest fashion with a double fault! 😅
Despite that late drama, the team wrapped up another excellent 7-1 victory - a result that keeps Mixed B sitting nicely at the top of the Division 3 table! 👏🎾

Another busy and successful week for the club teams!

On Tuesday evening, the Mixed A Team welcomed Wisbech Tennis Club A at home. Unfortunately, Wisbech were unable to field two pairs, meaning they started 0-4 down before a ball had even been hit. The weather certainly kept everyone on their toes, with players darting in and out of the clubhouse between the rain showers!
Becca and Will were first up and got the team off to a perfect start, taking both of their sets. James and Helen then stepped onto court and also secured both of theirs against Wisbech’s only pair. A convincing 8-0 victory for the team!

At the same time, the Mixed B Team travelled to Ketton Tennis Club. Despite three players only arriving at the agreed start time after being delayed by an accident on the A1, there was no slowing them down once they got on court!
Matt and Babs took a little while to warm into the match, losing their first set, but bounced back brilliantly to win a tie-break in the next before dominating the following two sets 6-0, 6-0 against the second pair. SJ and Chip flew out of the blocks with superb 6-0, 6-1 wins, although the first pair proved tougher opposition and they narrowly lost those two sets. An excellent 5-3 away win for the team!

To round off the week, the Mixed C Team welcomed City of Peterborough Tennis Club - inspire2coach D at home yesterday evening. Fi and Chris stormed into action with a 6-0 opening set, although their opponents settled well to make the second much closer at 6-4. Meanwhile, the left-handed partnership of Kate and David started with a tight 7-5 win before running away with the second set 6-0.
Against the first pair, Fi and Chris were involved in a tough battle, narrowly losing a tie-break before finishing strongly with a 6-4 win in the second set. Kate and David were clearly determined to get their money’s worth from the evening, battling to a 6-4 win before emptying the tank completely to take the final set 7-5! A fantastic overall 7-1 victory for the team! 🎉

Well done to everyone who played this week - looking forward to less dramatic weather next week!

What a fantastic afternoon at yesterday’s Women’s Doubles Tournament! 🎾
We had an amazing turnout of 16 women taking part, and it was brilliant to see so many new faces joining in. The pairs were picked out of the two hats - carefully balanced in ability, which made for some really competitive and enjoyable matches throughout the day.
The format saw two pools of four pairs playing round robin matches against each other, with the winner of each pool progressing to the final. Matches were played first to 5 games, with a tie-break at 4-4 and we certainly had a few of them!

The final was contested by Kate & Natalie against Michelle & Fi. It was a close start, with games going either way, but Kate & Natalie eventually pulled away to secure a well earned 5-2 victory. Huge congratulations to them! 👏🏆 (No trophy this year… but there definitely will be one by next year!)

After the tennis, everyone enjoyed drinks and a social on the balcony, complete with blankets - it was a chilly May afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who took part! We're very much looking forward to seeing everybody for the next women's doubles tournament on the 12th September complete with picnic lunch in the garden.
