People choose to support Children’s Sailing Trust for many different reasons, but one of our recent donors had a very special story to tell behind her gift.

Ena’s late husband, John, learned to sail many years ago in the 1940's at Calamansac on the Helford River. He then went on to teach his children and then his grandchildren to sail, at one time having a small fleet of sailing boats; a Drascombe Lugger, a Mirror Dinghy and a Topper. One of Ena and John's daughters even took to sailing so much that she ended up sailing around the world as far as Australia for six years!

Ena spent a lifetime working with children. With her love for sailing and the sea too, Children’s Sailing Trust seemed the perfect charity to support.

We had the pleasure of welcoming her and her daughter at our fully accessible Trevassack Lake HQ earlier this year. They thoroughly enjoyed seeing our Lugger as that was their family boat. We also discussed the possibility of a trip around the Lake for Ena on Floaty (our fully accessible floating platform) as she has not been on the water for over twenty years.

Thank you very much from everyone at the Trust for thinking of us and supporting the work we do. We honestly can’t do what we do without donations from supporters like Ena.

We're back on the water! This week marks the start of the Autumn term for schools that are sailing with us on our charitable sailing programme. We operate from the Helford River and at Trevassack Lake, and children from local schools will be coming to us for two hours each week over the next five weeks.

This five-week programme runs from 14th September – 12th October and the schools that are taking part in our programme this Autumn are Grade-Ruan C of E Primary School, Cusgarne Primary School, Constantine Primary School, Flushing, Curnow, Home Education Group, Cury, Cornwall College Cambourne, Three Bridges, Helston Community College and Garras.

Earlier this year we were successful in receiving funding from the TK Foundation’s Youth Sailing Grant Program. The TK Foundation supports non-profit youth sailing programmes that are reaching motivated disadvantaged youth.

This Texan charity is set up specifically to help people access the world of sailing and not only helped to fund one of our school places on this years School's Sailing Programme, but they have also sponsored sailing courses for young people to continue their sailing journey beyond the OnBoard scheme.

Our programme focuses on using the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) OnBoard framework which aligns closely with school outcomes resulting in more time on the water; quality of instruction; and long-term sustainability for the charity.

One of the six schools we work with for our SEND Programme is Helston Community College.

Jo Greet is the Assistant Headteacher, Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at the College. She had some lovely things to say about how our programme has had such a positive impact on their students, specifically around building confidence.

To help fund our SEND Programme which we run at our HQ at Trevassack Lake, a team at the college are organising some fundraising events for us which include bake sales, raffles, competitions and a possible talent show.

Our mission is to inspire young people to reach their potential by building skills for life through sailing. We work with local Primary Schools, providing children aged 8-11 years with the incredible opportunity of learning how to sail out on the open water - using sailing as a tool to teach resilience, teamwork and communication skills.

One of these schools is St Keverne Primary School who keep coming back year after year. Here’s what their Senior Teacher, Tom Mitchell, says about how we make a difference to the children at their school.

It’s always great to connect with local businesses who are keen to support local charities. Today, our Fundraising Lead met up with Matt at The Gym Project in Falmouth. Every three months or so, The Gym Project run a special charity bootcamp where the cost of the session goes to charity. And their Sept/Oct one is going to be for us! Thank you very much 😀.

Community fundraising means so much as it’s about coming together, sharing a belief in what our young people can achieve, and giving our community the opportunity to play a part in making a difference.

Every fundraiser, big or small, helps us give more children the chance to get out on the water, build confidence, develop new skills and experience the freedom and joy that sailing can bring.
