Uncovered: Scottish salmon farming industry "accidentally" underreported antibiotic use by 66%.
The industry body Salmon Scotland reported total antibiotic use in 2024 had reached a “record low” of 940 kilograms. But when investigative journalism platform The Ferret questioned the figures, Salmon Scotland stated it had made an “error” and revised the figure to 1,564 kilograms.
The updated figure represents around three supermarket trolleys of medicines entering Scotland’s sea lochs and coastal waters every single week.
This latest admission further undermines the industry’s credibility for providing reliable data to inform policy and regulation. Nick Underdown, our Scotland Director, said: “The public is repeatedly told that salmon farming is the most tightly regulated industry in the world, yet this is not true as key reporting is voluntary and breaches rarely result in meaningful sanctions".
The news hits as the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Affairs & Islands Committee is due to revisit its follow-up inquiry into the salmon farming industry.

Our response to today’s Water White Paper: We don’t need shiny new regulations - we need enforcement of existing ones. Both the water industry and farming sector already have regulations more or less sufficient to protect our rivers and wild fish. What’s missing is ACTION.
Recovery requires massive, sustained investment to tackle the growing threat from abstraction and the continued impacts of pollution - plus a dedicated and genuine commitment to protecting nature.
We want to see the government stop drafting new policies and start delivering on the ones we already have.

A year ago today, we re opened after a short maternity break to working one day a week. Lydia was 8 weeks old, but that's the life of a small business ower. 🐷🐮🐑
When we reopened that morning, it was insane. The website was so busy, and we sold out of our new keyrings in 20 minutes!! When we reopened, it was a juggle to get all the work done in 1 day and look after Lydia, boys, farm life etc but I made it work.
1 year on, I now have 2 child free days a week where I can sit at my desk and focus on my business and be "The Born To Farm Lady." And the rest of the week i juggle been nap times. The business has grown enormously in the last year, which i wasn't expecting with been on maternity, but the hard work and carnage has paid off.
I'm currently working on some sponsorship clothing, which looks amazing, I prepare to stand up at Transition Live next week for and talk about marketing strategies for your farm on a low budget and I'm preparing for the biggest show of the year, . 🐷🐮🐑 It's a busy few months, and I can't wait!
Thank you for the continued support, BTF wouldn't be where it is without your continuous support and orders. To celebrate the best year, all orders over £40 placed today (Saturday 3rd May) will receive a free keyring!
