⛳ The little details at Harrogate…

You may have noticed that our fairways have been cut two-tone for a few years, but did you know there’s actually a strategy behind the direction we cut them?

We cut our fairways so that the grain is running towards the green on the tougher side of the fairway to hit. That means if you’re brave enough to take on the more challenging line, you’re rewarded with a down-grain approach, which is generally easier to strike.

It’s a small detail, but one that can make a difference to how the course plays.
Interestingly, Augusta famously cuts its fairways so that approaches are played into the grain, creating a very different challenge.

📸 In this photo of our 2nd, you can see the darker side of the fairway is on the side of the bunkers. As the photo is taken from the green, that darker strip will appear into the grain.

Another little piece of course strategy you might not have noticed! 👀

⛳ Our 17th is often played downwind, offering a great opportunity to make a birdie – as long as your tee shot finds the narrow, tree-lined fairway.

Then comes the challenge of negotiating the sloping MacKenzie green. Get it right and you could be walking off with a birdie. Get it wrong and it can quickly undo all your good work!

At Harrogate Golf Club, we’re proud to offer our members and guests one of the top golf courses in the area – but the experience doesn’t stop when you walk off the 18th green.

We’ve recently refurbished our bar area, creating a fantastic space to relax, grab a drink and enjoy something to eat. And, of course, there’s our veranda – a wonderful spot to sit back, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the views.

Whether you’re discussing the birdie you’ll be talking about for weeks, the three-putt you’d rather forget, or simply catching up with friends, there’s no better way to round off your day.

Last week, our ladies enjoyed a fantastic Ladies Exchange Day with Shipley Golf Club ! ⛳️

Everyone had a brilliant day, enjoying the opportunity to play a course that was a little different to our own, followed by some great hospitality and fabulous food. 🍽️👏

Our final match took us to the beautiful Rudding Park, and what a way to finish the season! With temperatures reaching 30°C by the end of the day, it was certainly a hot one! ☀️🥵

A huge well done to our winning team, with Sue Almond and Charlotte Barrett putting in a fantastic performance and recording an impressive 8 pars on a long and challenging course. ⛳️👏

A special thank you to Rudding Park for organising such a wonderful day, making us feel so welcome and treating us to a delicious afternoon tea. ☕️🍰
