It’s been a hot minute since I posted on here- sorry! Life has just ran away with me these past weeks!

It’s been a busy busy summer, but with Louis back at school now for longer hours I now have a handful spaces in my diary to be able to take on new clients 😃 lately I’ve been working with a lot of cases which have proven to be difficult to get diagnosis for as they are a bit of a needle in a haystack from lameness, discomfort and lack of performance we analyse it all and work together with the vets to get your horse to where it needs to be, even if that’s just being comfortable for lower level work, or the higher performance level.

Does your horse do any of the following?

Struggle to come through/ engage
Simple 20m circles without falling out
Unevenness from one rein to the other
Difference on each rein with lateral work
Bend round your leg
Open up through their body

Our bodies affect them under saddle ALOT more than we realise! And being body aware is sooooo important!

This is a crucial part of Rider Biomechanics that I work with my clients, being aware. We are and always will be asymmetrical, it doesn’t matter how many gym sessions we do. Equally our horses are asymmetrical. So it’s hugely important that we understand how our bodies are behaving, and how our horses are aswell, then how to manage and work together more seamlessly- so we can maximise our riding!

I work with a range of levels and disciplines with Rider Biomechanics, and having the Equine Physiotherapy and EQ Band Coaching Qualification allows me to look both at horse and rider as a combination but also independently.

What Does A Physiotherapy Treatment Look Like With Me??

Genuinely, it’s usually a work out for me (especially the first 1/2 sessions) as my aim is to break through the superficial layers and actually delve deeper where the root of the tension is lying. It’s in cases like this why horses initially feel improved but it’s very short lived, as the muscle patterns and memory is not being broken down and allowed to adapt through therapy and exercise.

This is why during treatment there is never just one technique that I use, it really is a multi- technical treatment, using soft tissue manipulation, skeletal mobilisation, acupressure, trigger point therapy, energy work, stretching, class 4 laser therapy. All these used for the right reasons allow the horses body to release and realign itself, as well as teaching the horse self release.

With each treatment then comes a new layer of tension to work deeper in the body which I’ve often related this process to peeling and onion 🧅 it’s with this we see long term improvements through the horses muscle patterns, posture and biomechanics.

When horse and rider work in harmony…💕💕💕

What a dreamy feeling isn’t it when your horse just does what you ask and floats around the school, but how much do we affect the horse we’re riding??

ALOT!!!

Working with rider and horse combinations using rider biomechanics/ EQ Bands and being a Veterinary Physiotherapist enables me to assess the combination and identify what the horse is causing and what the rider is causing to address the problems and come up with solutions.

Working with my riders it’s not about “perfection” but about becoming more self aware about where our body is, and how that is affecting the horses performance and biomechanics.

For example- how do the position of our shoulders affect the movement of the horses shoulders and the rest of their bodies?

The Thoracic Sling…

An element in the horse which has a huge implication to the horses posture and biomechanics… both of which you all know I love to go on about!

I see horses daily who are SUPER restricted and reactive through this region, why is dependent on each individual horse- sometimes it’s training, saddle fit, conformation, age etc etc. like everything there are different factors that cause this which we identify during treatment.

However- THIS AREA NEEDS TREATMENT AND ATTENTION!!

I’m talking soft tissue manipulation, skeletal mobilisation of the withers, ribcage, scapula, sternum, diaphragm, there’s a lot! Without doing this we are NOT giving the horse the capabilities to be able to use themselves correctly- they are essentially STUCK!

Well, I can honestly say 4 months ago I did not know where I was going to be right now, having closed the Hydrotherapy and Rehab Centre whilst it was a sad moment in my career it was the best decision for my personal life in order to be able to provide and be present as a single parent for Louis.

However, I am so thankful of the platform the centre gave me, the knowledge and experience I have gained has enabled me to be the Highly Experienced Physiotherapist and provide the service that I do for my clients.

The support I have received over the years has been incredible and I thank each and every one of my past and present clients 💕 Thank you 😘

Now it’s onto a NEW CHAPTER! Just as Herts Horses Physiotherapy 🥰 So here’s to exciting new things this year to come, and continuing to develop knowledge and experience as you never stop learning!

Scapula and Thoracic Sling Releases…

Lots of horses progressing, lifting up through the shoulders and thoracic sling, however with this progress comes tension and restriction as with all athletes.

The Pelvis…

Another area which I find has been overlooked which can have a huge affect on the posture and biomechanics of a horse.

Made up of deep dense muscle I often find clients stuck in an anterior posture through the pelvis, whilst most worry more about pelvic rotation, this to me is a really important factor as it is more common to be affecting the horse on a global level.

An anterior pelvic posture increases thoracic extension (back hollowing), which leads mostly leads to weight shifting through the thoracic sling and onto the sternum (being on the forehand) and bracing through the neck and poll/ hyoid… more often than not when I see a new client their pelvic muscle is blocked and stuck in this posture that even if the rider is asking all the right things and doing all the correct exercises, the horse still cannot use itself efficiently and effectively.
For the horse to be able to move and work correctly this area has to be mobilised and released both through the skeleton and soft tissue.

Improved muscle patterns, postural correction and biomechanics = decreased risk of strain/ injury and improved performance!

Hugely over looked area in the horse which has massive implications on the biomechanics and posture.

I’ve recently seen a lot of horses who have had dysfunctions through the thoracolumbar and lumbosacral regions, decreased mobility, hip flexor discomfort, reduced performance, and showing signs of discomfort… but do you know what can cause this? What are the signs to look out for?
