Our ponies are enjoying summer grazing, we’ve been busy with the farrier and worm egg counts this week. We always feel like summer is the period of rest before winter comes back round….in fact it’s busier…much much busier!!!

Today at BOOTS ON!

Showering ponies and bathing children!

DONOVAN- our King and my my most bestest mate in the world had to have major laser surgery. This surgery was to remove 17 sarcoids (cancerous skin tumours) from various places on his body.

These tumour can’t spread to other areas of the body, and the type he had caused him no pain. The problems come when they get knocked or disturbed and then can bleed and open up routes of infection. Also, when they affect eyes, face and sheath areas they can really impact quality of life.

He’s doing really well, eating, drinking and coping pretty well with the heat. I’m doing everything possible to encourage healing and prevent infection. He’s been on antibiotics and pain relief and been getting extra treats to cheer him up!

Right now we are focussed on his recovery and keeping the others in the herd happy and healthy in these mad temperatures!

These wounds are 5 days healed.

IT’S A HOT ONE!!!

So, what can we do yo make our horses cooler and comfy in this heat??

- clipping, we’ve clipped our hairiest ones to make them more comfy.

- electrolytes in their water and extra water to replace salts etc lost through sweat

-access to a salt lick to encourage drinking

- wet their hay to give extra water there

- sloppy/soupy feeds!

- fruit high in water content if they’re ok with it diet wise.

-exercise when it cool, first thing or evening…although think also about humidity not just the temperature.

-cool showers, don’t scrape of the water…the wetter the better!

- shade, if they have to be out, make sure they have shade. We have the barn which is cool and has a nice breeze blowing through!

GOOD MORNING FROM BOOTS ON HQ!!

I’ve been up since 3am, contemplating the meaning of life and what’s beyond the universe….in other words….insomnia!

There’s lots going on for our Boots On Crew at the moment, both with Boots On itself and personally.

As you all know our son Jacob has complex needs and ASD, he’s the brains behind Boots On and came up with the name (albeit accidentally!) he begins high school in September, and is headed firmly into puberty. He is finding life very challenging right now which in turn makes it challenging for us and for his sisters. We are navigating it the best we can with very little support from outside agencies.

My main man Donovan aka Geek is also having a tough time right now, he’s due back at Oakhill for surgery this month which has come a little unexpectedly as we thought we could schedule it for autumn when the flies went back to sleep for the winter. He has a recurrence of sarcoids which in themselves are not causing him pain or illness and they are really well managed, however they have multiplied in number and therefore we can’t wait any longer. As a result my time will be taken up over the next 12-16 weeks with his recovery which will be very challenging and time consuming, add to that the expense as recurrence is not coverable on insurance, this takes money away from Boots On.

At the moment Boots On is entirely self funded as we have not secured funding as we had hoped to, we have a big dream and we want to do great things and we will continue to work hard behind the scenes and share updates with you. As for our hands on work, watch this space…

We’re spending our days making sure our herd are healthy and comfortable whilst we have this stint of HOT weather 🥵

Although our fields have plenty of shade, the herd are brought into the barn when the heat is at peak so they have plenty of shade with a nice cool breeze.

Given a majority of our ponies are black- they absorb the heat so can easily over heat, the other 2 are pink skinned so are prone to sunburn- the barn is the place to be!

They have access to plenty of fresh water, salt licks and nice sloppy feeds to make sure they stay hydrated.

They are showered with the hose to keep cool too 🚿

They’ll all be turned out a bit later when the temperatures are cooler with plenty of horse safe suncream on their muzzles 🩷

BEAR!!! what a success story! ‘We’ bought Bear at the end of January, and as the top picture shows he wasn’t looking too good. He’d not been trimmed by a farrier for almost 5 months, he was underweight, in poor condition, matted and mud caked and an anxious stressed boy, often kicking out and biting to tell us he was struggling.

Four months later and lots of patience, kindness, and time, accompanied by good nutrition, a herd to belong to, experience, knowledge and know how….well, the picture speaks for itself!!

You can’t argue with the change! It’s there and the camera never lies….Bear, you are a superstar!
