With today’s match rained off, Highnam Court 1st XI have secured the Division 7A title 🏆

Not how we would have wanted to mark the occasion, but it ends a fabulous season with just one league defeat, a record points haul and a second title in four years - and confirms our return to Division 6 for the first time in 16 years!

Three years on from a title win and earning promotion back into Division 7, Highnam Court 1sts have done it again! 🏆

With two games to go the side are mathematically assured of finishing in the top two and are two wins away from securing yet another title, with a first season in Division 6 since 2011 on its way!

Despite a few recent defeats, our 2nds have also assured themselves of a place in Division 8 next year and will earn their best ever league position.

To go with club record wins for both 1s and 2s, as well as the highest 1s team and individual scores being broken, plus the midweek side securing another season at their highest ever level, our 50th anniversary year is two weeks away from ending as possibly the most successful EVER! 🎉

A very, very special day yesterday saw Highnam win two absolute thrillers within an hour of each other, as each team did their best to outdo the other in winning from an almost impossible situation!

The 2nd XI in fifth place hosted fourth placed Alvington & Woolaston, and got off to a flying start with the ball before strong lower order batting plus a mad final over saw Alvington recover from 102-6 and 142-8 to end on 198-8.

That would mean the 2s achieving their highest run chase in nearly 20 years, and when we slipped to 82-6, all hope was gone.

Enter Tim Gordon and Ajay Jobel. Tim batted sensibly whilst Ajay went after any oppportunity he could to score, and a blistering partnership of 71 in barely ten overs hauled us back into the game.

When Tim fell, followed quickly by another wicket, we still needed 43 with just two wickets left.

Hardly two overs later, the game was over. But not as you’d expect it! Ajay hit two sixes as 15 came from over 28, before five fours in over 29. Four byes to start the next over sealed it, with more than 10 overs to spare as we recovered from 82-6 to make 199-8 and win an absolute epic of a game, Ajay ending with his first fifty and 73*, having earlier taken 8-4-19-1.

Not to be bested, the 1st XI were in the midst of a run chase of their own at third-placed Penallt & Redbrook, needing 204 to win and move to the brink of promotion.

Jason Mosley scored an epic ton as the 1s rocketed to 149-3, before a collapse of 4 for 20 left us reeling and Penallt on the brink of victory at 169-7, Jason departing for exactly 100 off of just 71 balls.

There were still 13 overs to go with 35 needed, but Penallt’s leading bowlers were ripping through the middle order, looking to repeat their comeback of two weeks earlier.

Mike Webb and George Headington remained composed and inched us nearer the finish line, before a quality piece of fielding ran Mike out for 11, and we were still 19 short with young Freddie Warren joining his captain in the middle.

Sharp running and the odd boundary in the face of excellent bowling and brilliant fielding made for an absolutely gripping finale, as George got to 16 and Freddie 7 with five needed from the final three overs.

Each survived beauties which somehow evaded the stumps and we sneaked a few more runs, tying the scores heading into the final over.

But the drama wasn’t over yet! Looking to hit the winning run, George could only hit it back to the bowler and Highnam were nine down with the scores level.

Club legend Pete Whyard calmly finished the job. He whacked his first ball over point and completed the run, and Highnam 1s had dragged themselves over the line by 1 wicket in the final over, barely 45 minutes after Highnam 2s had themselves charged to victory by two wickets!

With four weeks to go, the 1st XI are one win away from promotion to Division 6 for the first time in 15 years, whilst the 2nd XI are a handful of points away from fourth place and a record breaking best ever season.

Both A&W and P&R need to be highly commended for their conduct in the games. Both matches were played in a superb spirit, very sportingly, and despite the tenseness of each match going to the wire, there was the opportunity to joke, laugh and congratulate opponents on their work. That is what village cricket is all about and it was a pleasure to share the field with each of those teams on a crazy day.

Our fiftieth anniversary season is already half complete but it has been a tremendous start to a special year.

After nine matches, the 1st XI remain unbeaten, having won 7 and had two matches called off for rain, to sit 31 points clear at the top of the Division 7A table. Our next five matches are against the teams currently between 2nd and 6th, and so will provide a stern test to our as yet unblemished record.

The success has been built on a foundation of some extraordinary top order batting, with H Buckland (625), J Mosley (490) and M Patel (404) currently the top three scorers in the league, with a combined five centuries and eight fifties to their names. We have passed 300 four times this season, backed up by managing to bowl out the opposition in all bar one of our fielding innings so far, with G Headington (13), P Whyard (12) and R Eltringham (9) the leading bowlers.

The 2nd XI, in our second season in Division 8A, have gone about our matches in almost the opposite way! With three victories, four defeats and two matches lost to rain, we have triumphed in a pair of low scoring thrillers as well as a convincing run chase to ensure the club are still unbeaten at home on Saturdays in 2026.

The fielding efforts, particularly at home, have been outstanding, with S Dean (12), R Dean (8) and P Warren (7) the leading contributors, supported by top run scorer M Kumar (204) and 50+ scores from J Homer, R Shekoba and A Howard. We currently sit fifth, looking to hold on to a top-half finish and highest ever league position come the end of August.

The midweek side are also well placed, sat above the relegation spots in Division 3 with four matches left to play, and two further wins likely enough to retain our place in the league.

We have also enjoyed a two-day, two-innings match with Westbury-on-Severn to celebrate our fiftieth birthday, which quite unbelievably - and in no way contrived through four declarations - ended in a tie!

It has been an amazing season so far, and hopefully we can carry that on to make our half century a bat-raising worthy occasion. 🏏 🏏 🏏

Celebrating 50 Glorious Years at Highnam Court CC. Please join us for a celebration game v Westbury CC on Sunday 24th-Monday 25th May. 11am-6pm. Refreshments will be available throughout the match, with the official opening of our renovated pavilion at 4pm on the Sunday, followed by a BBQ. Former players, friends and supporters all welcome.

The club’s pre-season has concluded after friendlies against Down Hatherley Cricket Club and Ashleworth Woodpeckers CC.

In the first match on Saturday 18 April, HCCC were put in to bat and after retired 50s for J Mosley (58) and M Patel (70), some late order runs took us to 234-8.

In reply, a fast start with wickets for H Haridas, D Brand and J Mosley, plus three for G Headington, had Highnam on top, before an excellent seventh wicket partnership took Down Hatherley over the line with five overs to spare.

A competitive and entertaining game, despite the cold weather and evident rustiness, saw DH the victors by four wickets.

In our second match on Saturday 25 April hosting Woodpeckers, retired 50s for M Patel (55), T Gordon (54) and D Oryakhil (55) helped Highnam reach 239 despite an early wobble after being asked to bat first.

In reply, Woodies put up strong resistance early on before 4 wickets in an over for F Warren ensured Highnam ran out winners by 117 runs, with the other wickets shared amongst R Eltringham (3), G Headington (2), L Cruze (2), H Buckland (2) and M Patel (1).

A match played in a superb spirit, ensuring all 25 players got to bat on a beautiful April afternoon.

Our league season starts next weekend, with the 1st XI hosting Tormarton CC in their Division 7A opener, and the 2nd XI visiting Westbury-on-Severn CC to face their 2nd XI to commence their season in Division 8A.

HIGHNAM COURT YOUTH CRICKET 2026

After a successful few seasons having brought youth cricket back to the village, we are pleased to announce the following dates for the spring of 2026.

Dynamos

Dynamos cricket, offered to children aged 8-11, will be run on Friday evenings at the ground between 6 and 7pm for eight weeks, running from 8th May to 26th June.

U13s

U13 sessions will continue to be held at the ground for ages 12 and 13, this season moving to Monday evenings between 6 and 7pm, starting from May 11th and running until late June.

No need to book, just turn up on the day and our coaches will meet you there!
