Presented by the Weight Lifting Foundation in memory of Brian Hamill, the award recognises individuals under the age of 23 who have made an outstanding contribution to their weightlifting club through leadership, volunteering or service to others.
Sean, who trains with Team Cavanagh Weightlifting Club in Glasgow, has already established himself as one of the UK’s leading youth athletes. He is the current British Under 17 Champion in the 94kg category.
At the Celtic Championships in Scotland last year, Sean lifted 110kg in the sn**ch and 135kg in the clean and jerk, continuing a strong run of performances on the platform.
Alongside his success in competition, Sean’s commitment and attitude have had a significant impact within his club environment.
Nominating Sean for the award, Team Cavanagh Weightlifting Club coach Ray Cavanagh highlighted the example he sets for younger athletes through his dedication, consistency and professionalism.
Training five times per week, often twice per day, Sean balances the demands of high-performance sport alongside full-time education. He has also secured offers from four universities.
Ray Cavanagh said:
“Sean’s commitment sets the tone for our entire club. Younger lifters look up to him, copy his training habits, and see first hand what is possible through discipline and consistency. His presence has elevated the culture of the club, creating an environment where hard work, respect, and ambition are the norm. He is a role model in every sense — humble, reliable, and driven.”
The Brian Hamill Award will support Sean’s continued development, helping contribute towards competition entry fees, travel and accommodation costs for major events, including the British Age Group Championships in England.
These opportunities will play an important role in supporting Sean’s long-term ambition of representing Great Britain on the international stage.
Congratulations to Sean on receiving this well-deserved recognition.
