Clyde Cruising Club was honoured to receive an invitation to the Garden Party at Holyrood Palace last week. Valued members Hugh and Sylvia McLean attended on the Club’s behalf.

They enjoyed a fantastic day in the palace gardens, meeting guests from across Scotland who had also been invited in recognition of their contributions. With warm sunshine, a few passing showers and a close view of the Royal party, it was a memorable occasion.

Thank you to Hugh and Sylvia for representing the Club. We are delighted they were able to attend on behalf of the Clyde Cruising Club.

ONE WEEK TO GO until the CCC Summer Cruise in Company! ⛵️🌊

The fleet is shaping up nicely, and we can’t wait to get everyone together for a fantastic week on the water.

The plan? A weekend sail from Oban to Tobermory, with the option to race in the Tobermory Race, followed by a ceilidh at Aros Halls before setting off on a relaxed cruise around the Small Isles and Skye.

Weather permitting, we’ll explore some of the West Coast’s most stunning scenery, enjoy beautiful anchorages, and round off a few days with meals at the Old Forge in Inverie and Café Canna.

The Clyde Cruising Club's North Channel Race delivered a classic offshore challenge, with four boats setting off from Inverkip at 2000 on Friday evening in a light south-westerly breeze bound for Bangor, Northern Ireland.

The early stages proved testing. The breeze faded around the Cumbraes, leaving crews searching for pressure and making tactical decisions from the outset. Bijou opted for the Arran shore while Infinite Improbability, Tangaroa and Mocking J headed down Irvine Bay to avoid the expected wind shadow. Throughout the night the wind shifted between northwest and southwest, keeping crews busy with sail changes and constantly reassessing their strategy.

South of Holy Isle, the fleet settled into a long, light-air beat towards Ailsa Craig. Progress was slow, and by dawn concerns were growing about making the 1600 time limit. Bijou eventually retired, while the remaining boats pressed on through a particularly frustrating period of light airs off the Solway coast, with Mocking J notably maintaining excellent VMG and steadily closing the fleet.

The race finally sprang back to life in the North Channel as the breeze backed into the south and built to a pleasant Force 3. With sunshine, favourable tide and Bangor now within reach, hopes of a finish were restored. However, the race had one final twist. Less than a mile from the line, the wind disappeared once again, compressing the fleet dramatically.

After almost 20 hours of racing and a tactical battle fought in some of the lightest conditions seen this season, Mocking J, Tangaroa and Infinite Improbability crossed the finish line within just two minutes of one another and inside the original time limit.

A warm welcome awaited the fleet at Bangor Marina and the Royal Ulster Yacht Club. For some crews the race formed the perfect passage south for Bangor Regatta, while special credit goes to the crew of Mocking J, who completed the crossing before turning around to head home early the following day.

Congratulations to all skippers and crews on a memorable North Channel adventure.
