ONE EVENT CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING. πŸ“ˆπŸ΄
We’ve already seen just how much one strong tournament can change the Scottish Grappling Elo Rankings.
At the Caledonian Open, some competitors made huge jumps in a single event:
πŸ₯‡ James Brown β€” +116.93 Overall Elo
πŸ₯ˆ Abdolaziz Namdar β€” +113.71 Overall Elo
πŸ₯‰ Yeray Finnegan β€” +88.47 Overall Elo
These aren’t bonus points for entering.
They’re the result of what happened on the mat.
Every genuine contested match affects your Elo, and the strength of your opposition matters. Beat higher-rated competitors, put together a strong run, and your rating can move quickly.
And the next opportunity is coming.
SCOTTISH CUP β€” 12 SEPTEMBER 2026

THINK YOU SHOULD BE RANKED HIGHER? PROVE IT. πŸ“ˆπŸ΄
The Scottish Grappling Elo Rankings are live β€” but your current position is only a starting point.
Your next opportunity to change it comes at the Scottish Cup on 12 September 2026.
Elo isn’t an attendance points system.
You don’t climb the rankings simply by entering tournaments or collecting participation points.
Your results move your rating.
And importantly β€” who you beat matters.
Beat an opponent rated above you and there’s more Elo on the line. Beat someone you were expected to beat and the gain will be smaller.
That means one strong tournament against good opposition can make a serious difference to your position.
Already ranked?
Come and chase the athletes above you.
Sitting at #1?
Someone is coming for that spot. πŸ‘€

Your first eligible match starts your Scottish Grappling Elo journey.

NOT RANKED YET? START HERE. πŸ“ˆπŸ΄
Seen the Scottish Grappling Elo Rankings but can't find your name?
That's not a problem.
You don't need an existing Elo rating to compete at the Scottish Cup, and you don't need to have competed at the Scottish Open or Caledonian Open first.
Every ranking journey starts with Match #1.
Your eligible results at the Scottish Cup begin building your Scottish Grappling Elo rating, and that rating carries forward into future events.
And there are three ways to look at your ranking:
πŸ† OVERALL β€” eligible Gi + No-Gi matches combined
πŸ₯‹ GI β€” Gi matches only
πŸ‘• NO-GI β€” No-Gi matches only
Enter Gi, No-Gi or both and start building your competitive record.
The rankings aren't a closed club.
New competitors can enter the system at every event β€” and a strong first tournament could put your name straight into the mix.

CALEDONIAN OPEN β€” BIGGEST ELO MOVERS πŸ“ˆπŸ΄
Now that the inaugural rankings are out, we can start looking at what happened behind the numbers.
These are the competitors who made the biggest Overall Elo gains at the Caledonian Open.
πŸ₯‡ James Brown β€” +116.93 Elo
πŸ₯ˆ Abdolaziz Namdar β€” +113.71 Elo
πŸ₯‰ Yeray Finnegan β€” +88.47 Elo
And there were some serious ranking moves further down the list.
Yeray Finnegan climbed from #39 to #9 in his ranking pool, while Mark Wilson went from #9 all the way to #1.
Stephen Hamblin also did enough at the Caledonian to take over the #1 position in his pool.
This is where Elo gets interesting.
It isn't simply about winning a division or collecting ranking points. Every match is calculated individually, and the amount of Elo available depends on the relative ratings of the two competitors.
Beat stronger opposition and you can make a significant jump. Put together several strong results in one tournament and the effect compounds.
For competitors making their first appearance in the rankings, the Caledonian Open also established their initial position based on the matches they actually had β€” not simply where they finished on the podium.

And remember: these are Overall movements, so eligible Gi and No-Gi results are combined.
Next we can dig even deeper and look at the biggest movers in Gi and No-Gi separately. πŸ‘€

SCOTTISH GRAPPLING β€” JUVENILE NO-GI ELO RANKINGS 🏴
We’ve reached the final set of our inaugural rankings β€” Juvenile No-Gi.
These rankings are based exclusively on eligible No-Gi matches from the Scottish Open and Caledonian Open. Gi results have no effect on the ratings shown here.
Our current Juvenile No-Gi ranking features:
βšͺ Male White Belt
πŸ₯‡ #1 β€” Noah Hume
As with all of our Elo rankings, it isn’t simply about how many matches you win. Who you compete against matters. Results against stronger-rated opposition have a greater impact on your rating.
Weight categories are combined within each belt ranking. Juvenile absolute divisions are not included in the Elo rankings.
Only genuine contested matches count β€” byes, walkovers and no-shows do not affect Elo.
Belt promotions: Rankings reflect the belt at which an athlete has competed in Scottish Grappling ranking events. Promotions are reflected once the athlete competes at their new belt.
And with that, our inaugural rankings are complete:
πŸ† Overall
πŸ₯‹ Gi
πŸ‘• No-Gi
These rankings are the starting point, not the finished product.
Every future Scottish Grappling event will add more matches, connect more competitors and create more movement in the rankings.
Now things get interesting.
Next up: who made the biggest moves at the Caledonian Open? πŸ‘€

SCOTTISH GRAPPLING β€” MASTERS NO-GI ELO RANKINGS 🏴
Next up in our inaugural rankings: Masters No-Gi.
These rankings are based exclusively on eligible No-Gi matches from the Scottish Open and Caledonian Open. Gi results have no effect on the ratings shown here.
As with all of our Elo rankings, it isn’t simply about how many matches you win. Who you compete against matters. Beating stronger-rated opposition has a greater impact on your rating, and every new rating carries forward into the next event.
For Scottish Grappling, all Masters age divisions are combined into one Masters ranking. Whether an athlete competed at M1, M2, M3, M4 or another Masters age division, their results contribute to the same ranking for their gender and belt.
Weight categories are also combined, and eligible Masters No-Gi absolute matches contribute to the same Elo rating.
Our inaugural Masters No-Gi are:
πŸ”΅ Female Blue β€” Francesca Marchetti
βšͺ Male White β€” Craig Deeney
πŸ”΅ Male Blue β€” Stephen Hamblin
🟣 Male Purple β€” JM Proctor
Only genuine contested matches count β€” byes, walkovers and no-shows do not affect Elo.
Belt promotions: Rankings reflect the belt at which an athlete has competed in Scottish Grappling ranking events. Promotions are reflected once the athlete competes at their new belt.
These are the starting positions. As more Scottish Grappling events are added, every No-Gi match gives competitors another opportunity to gain Elo, climb the rankings and challenge for #1.

Next up: Juvenile No-Gi.

SCOTTISH GRAPPLING β€” ADULT NO-GI ELO RANKINGS 🏴
Now it’s time for No-Gi.
Here are the inaugural Scottish Grappling Adult No-Gi Elo Rankings, based exclusively on No-Gi results from the Scottish Open and Caledonian Open.
These rankings are completely independent from our Gi rankings. Only No-Gi matches affect the ratings shown here β€” Gi results have zero impact.
The Elo system rewards performance based on both the result and the strength of the opposition. Beating a higher-rated competitor earns more, while losing to stronger opposition has a smaller impact on your rating.
Weight categories are combined within each gender and belt, and eligible Adult No-Gi absolute matches also contribute to the same rating.
Only genuine contested matches count β€” byes, walkovers and no-shows do not affect Elo.
Our inaugural Adult No-Gi are:
βšͺ Female White β€” Phoebe Macdonald
πŸ”΅ Female Blue β€” Louise Brown
βšͺ Male White β€” Mark Wilson
πŸ”΅ Male Blue β€” Taylor McCann
🟣 Male Purple β€” Matthew Messer
These are the starting positions. As more Scottish Grappling events take place, every No-Gi match provides another opportunity to gain rating, climb the rankings and challenge for #1.
Belt promotions: Rankings reflect the belt at which an athlete has competed in Scottish Grappling ranking events. Promotions are reflected once the athlete competes at their new belt.

Next up: Masters No-Gi.

SCOTTISH GRAPPLING β€” JUVENILE GI ELO RANKINGS πŸ₯‹πŸ΄
Here are the inaugural Juvenile Gi Elo Rankings, based exclusively on Gi results from the Scottish Open and Caledonian Open.
These ratings are completely separate from our Overall rankings β€” only Gi matches count. No-Gi results have no effect on the positions shown here.
As with all of our Elo rankings, it’s not simply about the number of wins. Who you compete against matters. Results against stronger-rated opposition have a greater impact on your rating.
The current Juvenile Gi rankings feature:
βšͺ Male White Belt
πŸ”΅ Male Blue Belt
Only divisions with ranked competitors in the current dataset are published.
Weight categories are combined within each belt ranking, while Juvenile absolute divisions are excluded from the Elo system.
Only genuine contested matches count β€” byes, walkovers and no-shows do not affect Elo.
Belt promotions: Rankings reflect the belt at which an athlete has competed in Scottish Grappling ranking events. Promotions are reflected once the athlete competes at their new belt.
That completes our inaugural Gi rankings. πŸ₯‹
Next, we take the Gi off.
The Scottish Grappling No-Gi Elo Rankings are next. πŸ‘€

SCOTTISH GRAPPLING β€” MASTERS GI ELO RANKINGS πŸ₯‹πŸ΄
Next up in our inaugural rankings: Masters Gi.
These rankings are based exclusively on eligible Gi matches from the Scottish Open and Caledonian Open. No-Gi results have no effect on the ratings shown here.
As with our Overall rankings, Elo rewards results based not only on whether you win or lose, but also on the strength of the opponent you face. Beat stronger opposition and there’s more rating on the table.
For Scottish Grappling rankings, all Masters age divisions are combined. M1, M2, M3, M4 etc. all contribute to the same Masters ranking for the relevant gender and belt.
Weight categories are also combined, and eligible Masters Gi absolute matches contribute to the same rating.
Only genuine contested matches count β€” byes, walkovers and no-shows do not affect Elo.
With Gi and No-Gi now being ranked independently, we're already starting to see how the standings can differ depending on the ruleset.
Belt promotions: rankings reflect the belt at which an athlete has competed in Scottish Grappling ranking events. Promotions are reflected once the athlete competes at their new belt.
These are the starting positions. Every future Scottish Grappling Gi match gives competitors another opportunity to climb.
Next up: Juvenile Gi. πŸ₯‹
Then we take the jackets off and reveal the inaugural No-Gi rankings. πŸ‘€
