When people ask what Merchant City Yoga's Yoga Teacher Training is like, Judi always says that our graduates are our best advert.

She could tell you about the curriculum, the guest teachers, the anatomy, philosophy and teaching practice. But the people who've spent a year on the course can tell you something different.

We asked a few of our recent graduates to describe the training in three words.

Their answers are all unique but together they paint a picture of a course that's about so much more than learning to teach yoga.

As one graduate says, it encourages you to "look deeper into yourself as a whole."

If you're curious about joining our Yoga Teacher Training this September, we'd love to hear from you.

Everyone doing their own thing, but not alone.

This is what a Mysore-style Ashtanga class looks like.

Rather than following a teacher at the front of the room, each student practises at their own pace while receiving individual guidance and support. It can look unusual from the outside but it's one of the reasons so many people fall in love with Ashtanga.

If you've ever been curious about Mysore classes but aren't sure where to begin, our 4-week Intro to Ashtanga Yoga course with Annabelle Mac is the perfect place to start. You'll learn the foundations of the practice step by step and experience the Mysore-style approach in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment.

✨ Starts Thursday 6 August
✨ 7.30–9pm

Many yoga practitioners know the Aṣṭāṅga opening chant.

Fewer have had the opportunity to explore its meaning, philosophy and pronunciation in depth.

In July's Seasonal Mantra session, Laura Gonzalez will guide us through the chant line by line, exploring not only how it is recited but also the ideas and traditions that sit behind it.

No knowledge of Sanskrit or singing ability is required.

Sunday 26 July, 3pm - 4.15pm

A common misconception about yoga teacher training is that it's mostly about learning postures and sequences.

Those things matter but a well-rounded 200 hour programme should offer much more than that.

Judi says:

"A well-rounded 200 hour programme should give you far more than a library of yoga poses. It should offer you a genuine education in yoga."

That means exploring philosophy, history, anatomy, physiology, breathwork, meditation and teaching skills, alongside developing your own practice.

And perhaps most importantly, understanding that 200 hours is only the beginning.

Yoga is vast.

No honest teacher training can teach you everything.

What it can do is provide strong foundations, support your curiosity and help you continue learning long after the course ends.

We’re all always students - and what a treat to spend the past four days with Sri Sudhir Tiwari and my fellow explorers.

In this world of busy it felt like such a luxury to slow down and explore the breath, approach yoga asana with therapeutic functions in mind and take savasana after each one.

This morning during my regular Ashtanga practice a couple of things Sudhir said over the weekend kept coming to mind:

^ Yoga is action with due thought

^ Before doing individual asana for therapeutic benefits breath and heart rate should be normal

^ In yoga practice, awareness is the key - it requires your presence

And it occurs to me that all of these point to the necessity of slowing down - so not a luxury then, but an integral part of our yoga practice.
