HOW TO USE - 5 POSES EVERY CHILD NEEDS
Following on from our list, from last week - let’s start with NO.2
8-12yr olds NEED this more than ever!
(See previous post on the 5 Poses EVERY Child’s Yoga Class should include - Here is Pose 2)
WHY?
💔 too much slumping over desks, on tablets, not enough exercising
💔 making muscles in the chest & shoulders too tight and spinal muscles too weak and over stretched
💔 poor posture is affecting physical & mental health
💔 tight chest & slumped position means expansion of lungs are affected. Also spending too long in a closed position puts us into a depressed/stress response
WHAT TABLE TOP DOES?
💗 open chest & shoulders
💗 strengthens the muscle of the back body (neck, spinal muscles & hamstrings) meaning they can go about everyday activities and hold their body upright
How this helps
1️⃣ crab football keeps them in the posture longer as they are distracted chasing the ball
2️⃣ wall tunnels we place knees on the wall to engage muscles and encourage awareness
All our Little Greene Yoga teachers are not only trained in age appropriate methods but also on why our techniques work and how to run successful classes both privately and in educational establishments.

CHILDREN’S YOGA SHOULDN’T BE A RANDOM COLLECTION OF FUN SHAPES.
Every posture should have a purpose.
Children now spend so much of their day sitting, studying and looking down at screens.
Over time, that repeated forward-folded position can affect the way their neck, shoulders, spine and upper body function.
That’s why I believe these five movements deserve a place in every child’s yoga class:
1️⃣ Bellows - opens the chest and encourages fuller breathing
2️⃣ Tabletop - strengthens the back body and stabilises the shoulders
3️⃣ Caterpillar - works the whole body while lengthening the backs of the legs
4️⃣ Upward Bow - opens the front of the body and strengthens the upper back
5️⃣ Superman - strengthens the muscles supporting the spine
Of course, children aren’t going to practise them simply because they’re “good for their posture”!
The skill lies in turning purposeful movement into stories, games and challenges they genuinely want to join.
Fun and function don’t have to be opposites.
In 2017 I wrote an article about these 5 postures for OM Yoga & Lifestyle
You can read the full article on my website: (link in profile and in 1st comment).
This was written 9 years ago but with many younger children using electronics tablets, even in schools, these postures are required to compensate for the negative effect on our children’s bodies! Follow for next post on how to use!

A QUALIFICATION IS ONE THING.
TEACHING YOUR FIRST REAL CLASS IS ANOTHER.
This is Carra, one of our recently qualified instructors, teaching her practical exam to eight real children.
And yes, the beanbags balanced on their backs are all part of the lesson! 😊
Carra is now preparing to begin an exciting additional career, setting up her own private children’s classes.
But she isn’t beginning with only a certificate.
She is beginning with experience.
That is one of the things that makes our teacher training so different.
We keep our training groups intentionally small—generally no more than 10 people, because we want to know every student: their background, personality, strengths and individual teaching style.
Before attending the LIVE training, everyone completes the required online preparation. This means the whole group arrives with the same foundational knowledge—so nobody feels behind or believes somebody else has an advantage.
The LIVE training is where everything comes together.
We learn how to:
✨ Use the lesson plans provided
✨ Create original lessons - which is enormous fun!
✨ Understand children’s development
✨ Use movement, structure and connection to reduce behavioural difficulties
✨ Build safe, engaging and age-appropriate classes
✨ Begin turning the qualification into a real business
Students practise teaching their own lesson plans and receive detailed video feedback.
Then comes the part that matters most:
Then comes the part that matters most:
The practical exam - with real children, in a real setting, experiencing the realities of a real class.
Because nothing feels quite as daunting as teaching your first children’s class.
We guide every student through that experience, providing practical feedback and helping them develop the confidence to move forward.
So our students leave with more than a qualification.
They leave having already taught their first class.
Congratulations, Carra. What a wonderful way to begin your new additional career 💗

3 DAYS into the Scottish school year… and I’ve already had 100+ messages from teachers asking for classroom management tips.
That’s the highest number I’ve ever received in such a short period.
Of course, the first few days back can feel chaotic! 😬
But I think there’s something bigger going on.
Many children are struggling to regulate their nervous systems in a classroom environment - and often in other environments too.
That’s why I’ve already delivered 2 half-day INSET sessions in schools at the start of the 2026/27 academic year, helping teachers understand practical ways to support nervous system regulation.
For teachers who are struggling right now, I’ve been pointing them towards my mini-course:
✨ 3 DAYS TO CLASSROOM CALM ✨
And despite the name, you don’t just get 3 days!
You get 8 weeks ( a full academic term ) so you can practise the techniques regularly and build them into your classroom routine.
The 5-minute practices use your body’s own physiology to help calm the nervous system.
You can show the videos to your class, but I believe it works even better when you teach the practices yourself.
Because regulation is about much more than an exercise.
It’s about Connection! Relationships! Trust!
And the lovely thing?
It can regulate you too. 🩷
Plus… you and your class will have FUN doing it!

Crawling isn’t just for babies!
It can be a powerful way to support children’s development, coordination and nervous-system regulation…….teens and adults too!
A perfect way to integrated PRIMITIVE REFLEXES which have been retained or have re-emerged due to a physical or emotional trauma or a virus!!!
Why is this important?
Retained primitive reflexes (RPRs) are heavily correlated with developmental inefficiencies.
They act like a “brake” in our nervous system!
WE CAN INTEGRATE OR RE-INTEGRATE AT ANY TIME!
This is the kind of practical, developmentally-informed movement we teach in our classes ……….for kids, teens or adults!
If you work with kids or teens and are interested in our trainings then see our profile for details (or first comment).
Profile 👆will also list our adult, teen & kids classes and the work we do in schools!

Hi, I’m Veronica, the founder of Little Greene Yoga.
For over 24 years I’ve specialised in teaching yoga to children and teenagers.
One thing I’ve learnt?
Children are NOT mini adults……….AND they need variety to keep them coming………..this is what develops their body & brain!
That’s why our trained teacher maintain their students and our teacher trainings are built around child development - not just yoga poses.
If you’d like to know more about my training school and courses they take a look at my bio for the links.
Hope to see you on a course soon!
