Object to 83 Sword St development 🚨

Many folk have been in touch about the development plans of 83 Sword St to flatten the site for 12 flats - I've submitted an objection on this, here's what I said:

"I’m writing in objection to application 26/01285/PPP on 83 Sword St. I believe that application does not accommodate community needs within the area which will be lost if this application as approved, as well as outstanding issues of the application if it were to succeed.

Firstly it’s important to highlight the losses to the community if this were to proceed. The Dance HQ is a dance studio that provides weekly classes for all ages. They have also been part of internationally recognised events, including performances during the Commonwealth Games this summer. It’s been noted across the Dennistoun area the lack of amenities, due to the loss of spaces like Whitehill Pool and Alexandra Park sports hub. The loss of this will just compound the ever-increasing loss of community amenities in the East End, and would not be consistent with the community’s desire for the return of such spaces, not reduction of them. Equally, there are other organisations such as workshops Design and Make, whose loss would stymie locally grown workshops who make furniture sustainably. This is just a small snapshot of the loss organisations based in the existing building would be, there are several others. I would ask members to consider CDP1’s objective 10 on impact of amenities and whether the cost of such for this community outweighs the approval of this application, which is what I would believe to be the case.

Secondly, I wish to object to the ground floor car parking plan. CDP1 objective 11 has under new developments point 8 that the Council would no support car parking “at ground or street level where this would be at the expense of an active frontage onto a public street or space”. To have ground level opportunities for housing but in particular a space that would accommodate ground floor frontage units of organisations affected replaced by space accommodation off street parking is not just in contrast to our objectives of CDP1, but feels inconsiderate to the impact of the loss of amenities by prioritising cars over community spaces. I believe the parking issue is one Ms Cusick of GCC also has raised at pre-application stage, and I would suggest that this is still not an adequate plan for ground floor building use at all.

I hope that this gives planning the true sense of loss this development would have on amenities and the local economy if redeveloped for housing which has a car focus for the undercroft, which I do not believe benefits the community. The focus of addressing vacant and derelict land in the immediate vicinity such as with the Gallowgate TRA with more housing at density is the way to address the housing emergency, while respecting the needs of community amenities throughout. This application is not. Please refuse this application."

🆘 SAVE OUR STUDIO 🆘

We were shocked and saddened to discover in the Glasgow Times that Glasgow City Council has received a planning application (26/01285/PPP) to demolish the building at 83 Sword Street to build a block of flats.

This means losing Dance HQ—a vital community space for our kids, health, and fitness in the East End.

We need as many local residents and dance families as possible to lodge an objection before the council decides on Friday 11 September.
