Alexithymia can sometimes look like a child who appears calm, detached or โunbotheredโ โ even when there is far more happening internally.
A young person may struggle to recognise what they are feeling, find the words to describe it, or notice the physical signals that usually help us identify emotions.
That doesnโt mean they donโt have emotions. It can mean those emotions are difficult to identify, interpret and communicate.
These are some of the signs of alexithymia you might notice in children and teenagers.

Sometimes school anxiety starts before anything has actually happened.
Thatโs because the brain learns from experience.
If school has repeatedly felt overwhelming, unpredictable or difficult, the brain can begin to anticipate that feeling โ and the alarm response may start earlier and earlier.
At the classroom door.
While getting dressed.
The night before.
Eventually, sometimes just from thinking about school.
This is why simply saying โthereโs nothing to worry aboutโ may not be enough.
We need to understand what is activating that childโs alarm system and help create new experiences of predictability, coping and safety.
School anxiety has been our topic this week โ looking beyond the behaviour to understand what may be happening underneath it.

When anxiety starts to rise, grounding can help bring attention away from racing thoughts and back to what is happening right here, right now.
The 5-4-3-2-1 technique uses the senses to give the brain something concrete to focus on โ noticing what you can see, touch, hear, smell and taste.
It can be useful for children, young people and adults, but remember: not every calming strategy works for every nervous system. Offer it as a tool, rather than another demand.
Save this one for when you need it.

Join us for our monthly workshop as we focus on the summer meridian lines of the Heart and Small Intestine. Through a restorative Yin practice, we'll gently open the heart centre and release deep-held tension within the body.
We'll also explore a range of concentration and meditation techniques, supported by pranayama (breathwork), to balance energy, calm the nervous system, and cultivate a greater sense of inner ease.
The workshop will finish up with a soothing sound experience, allowing you to fully rest and absorb the benefits of the practice.
Together, these elements help reduce stress, regulate the nervous system, and leave you feeling calmer, lighter, and more grounded as you move into the month ahead.
