Great Glen Ways

If you have been on the Great Glen Way near Invermoriston recently, you may have noticed that the view-catcher is no longer in place. After years of weathering the elements, it had reached the end of its life and was unfortunately in danger of collapsing. For everyone’s safety, it had to be cut down.

It’s a loss, the view-catcher was a favourite stopping point for countless people but we’re already exploring options for a new and improved version. With a bit of luck, we’ll be able to bring it back before long.

NEW GREAT GLEN WAY SECTION OPEN

The new Ancarraig to Clunebeg section of the Great Glen Way, taking the route off the Bunloit Road for its 3.3km length, is now open to walkers and cyclists. Horse-riders are kindly requested to wait until late summer, particularly on the steeper Clunebeg end, in order to allow the surface to naturally dry and settle correctly, with thanks for your patience. There is still a small part of the route to complete where forestry extraction works are taking place, please take care in this area and follow the advice signs.

The project was implemented on budget by Mark Hedderwick and his team at Hitrak Ltd, who are highly skilled in their craft, having used local materials and taken great care of local environment and vegetation throughout the project. We are grateful to Highlands Rewilding for their co-operation and gift of land throughout the project, and to the Outdoor Access team at the Highland Council for their project management and ongoing maintenance work on the route. Users of the Great Glen Way spend around £3m in local businesses annually, and we are continually seeking to improve the experience for our visitors and local users.

Running event on the Great Glen Way | 2-3 May.

Please be aware that the Ultra‑X event will take place over the weekend of 2-3 May. As a result, there is expected to be a higher than normal number of people using the route between Fort Augustus and Inverness during this period.

Scotland - Ultra X Multi-Day Ultra Marathon Trail Running Series | Ultra X Ultra X Scotland takes place over 2 days in the Scottish Highlands. Participants cover between 110km and 25km.

Alltsigh Route Update: Both the low and high routes are open and operating as normal.
The quarry works previously underway on the Alltsigh high route have now been completed, and the Great Glen Way is fully open. Users may once again choose to travel between Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit via either the high route or the low route.

Alltsigh Route Update: Low Route Reopens, Temporary High Route Closure - February & March

We’re pleased to share that harvesting works near Invermoriston have now been completed, allowing the Alltsigh low route to fully reopen as a through-route on the Great Glen Way. Please be mindful that forestry vehicles may still be using the track and give them plenty of space to pass safely.

However, as the low route reopens, a section of the high route will now be closed for a little over a month to allow essential quarry works to take place. During this period, visitors will need to follow the low route, though there will be opportunities to re-join the high route from approximately halfway along. Please refer to the map for detailed diversion options.

This temporary diversion is expected to remain in place until the end of March.

We are pleased to announce the start of construction on a new section of path near Drumnadrochit. This improvement will offer a more enjoyable route and spare walkers from so much tarmac underfoot.

The Highland Council has commenced a significant improvement project on the Great Glen Way that will remove more than 3km of the route from the public road. The existing on‑road section leading to Grotaig, south of Drumnadrochit, has long been highlighted by walkers as less enjoyable and, at times, uncomfortable and unsafe due to traffic levels.

Working in partnership with Bunloit Estate managers, Highlands Rewilding, the Council has developed a new off‑road alternative that will provide a safer and more rewarding experience for users.

Working to return lynx to northern Scotland | Lynx to Scotland Lynx to Scotland is working to return Eurasian Lynx to northern Scotland through a broadly accepted and carefully managed reintroduction.

Alltsigh Low/High Route Closure and Diversion Information: November 2025 – February 2026 (NOW COMPLETE - SEE LATEST POST FOR DETAILS)

A section of the Low Route near Invermoriston will be temporarily closed from November 2025 to allow forestry harvesting works to take place. The route is expected to reopen in early March 2026.
The harvesting activity is restricted to a small area on the hillside north of Invermoriston, meaning that the majority of the Low Route will remain accessible. However, it cannot be used as a through route during this period. Walkers and cyclists may still enjoy the open section as an out and back route, or connect between the High and Low Routes using the linking vehicle track located approximately halfway along the affected section (see map for details).

During the closure, users will be directed onto the High Route, which:
• is approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) shorter than the equivalent Low Route section
• does not introduce significant additional elevation
• includes some steeper gradients that may be more challenging for cyclists

Small update regarding the recent windblow affecting the Great Glen Way: Almost all of the trees along the route have been cleared. There are a couple of individual ones remaining but these don't pose much of an obstacle and we'll be clearing them as soon as possible.

We have been hard at work these past two weeks, clearing the carnage left behind by Storm Amy. Almost all of the fallen trees have been removed from the path but a couple of sections are still to be dealt with. We'll hopefully have everything cleared before too long.
