I've written a post on Substack (typeoneruncoach.substack.com) on keeping speed work in your training plan, even for ultra marathons.

I''m also sharing a FREE 6-week speed plan for anyone who subscribes to my Substack.

I've been writing on there for a while now. It follows my running story and what it's like to be a runner with Type 1 Diabetes. I look at the challenges that presents and the strategies I use to navigate the condition alongside training and racing in an endurance sport.

A large part of my running story is about being a coach. I look at things through a coaching lens but also touch on neurodiversity and social justice in the sport too.

Coming back from a running injury isn't glamorous, but it's a reality most runners will have to face. After a glute injury side-lined me for a month, I learned some valuable lessons about patience and smart training.

In my new blog post, I share my personal recovery journey, including how I used cross-training and strength work to get back on track.

If you're looking for guidance on how to navigate your own comeback, this is for you.

Check out the full story and my strategy for getting back to full strength and learn how to train smarter, not just harder:

🚨 Now Coaching Again — A Note for Runners Ready to Take the Next Step 🚨

Hi folks, I’ve recently reopened this page and wanted to say a quick hello 👋

For those who don’t know me (or haven’t seen a post in a while), I’m a running coach with a background in ultra marathons, trail running, and living and training with Type 1 Diabetes for over 20 years.

I’m now offering 1-to-1 coaching again, online, specifically for runners who are ready to take that next step, whether that’s:
✅ Moving from road to trail
✅ Tackling your first ultra or your next step up
✅ Training safely with T1D or another long-term condition
✅ Or just wanting a clear plan, support, and accountability

What I offer:
🗓️ Personalised training plan
📞 Walkthrough call
📈 Biweekly or monthly check-ins
📩 Unlimited messaging for questions and support

You don’t need to be fast or have it all figured out, just committed to moving forward and open to support.

📩 If that sounds like something you need, send me a message or drop a comment and I’ll be in touch.

Let’s build something that fits your body, your lifestyle, and your goals.

PS: If you know someone who might benefit from this, feel free to tag or share.

Runners! Have you ever been told you have weak hips or that your glutes are not firing? Well, working on your SQUAT will help you to activate your glutes and open up your hip drive for running 🏋️‍♀️🏃‍♀️

The best way to develop mobility for a better squat and to improve your glute activation and hip drive is to spend time in the squat. The more often you practice, the better you'll be.

If you do strength and conditioning with me, one of the first sessions you'll do is a whole session on squatting. If you want to become a faster, stronger, more resilient runner get in touch!

Excellent article 🍰

How Much Cake Can I Eat After Running? Hands up if you run for cake? Got to be honest – it’s my favourite part of ultra training. Don’t get me wrong, I love the beautiful views, the stunning countryside, the endorphins and that after exercise feeling of having accomplished something. I like cake more though! You’ve got to replace...
