Safety-critical work such as chimney sweeping needs a clear head, integrity and continued professional training. It doesn’t need a 12 hour shift designed to squeeze every last penny out of the diary and customers.

Case in point: we recently attended a house, where a previous local sweep had swept the chimney. No paperwork left or certificate or accreditation membership. The new customer complained the CO alarm in the kitchen kept activating, she felt unwell and the stove wasn’t functioning properly. We inspected it and found it blocked with chicken wire and excessive soot. The previous sweep had deliberately inserted chicken wire to act as a bird deterrent. How ridiculous and dangerous. When the customer tried to get it sorted, the previous sweep simply blocked their number — because apparently there’s no profit in putting your mistakes right. We won’t name em but you know who u are!

Some sweeps rush jobs, miss things, or just don’t know or care and then hide behind a bit of patter and polish. We don’t.

We work proper hours because tired, lazy or incompetent sweeps make mistakes. Every job deserves the time to be done correctly, safely and professionally — without cutting corners just to squeeze another job into the diary.

This came in yesterday, new customer who wanted a standard sweep. It’s fair to say they left it a bit long, and are lucky they hadn’t had a chimney fire. Two hours of cleaning later, with continued creosote removal treatment and a re-visit in one month to see if cleared. Creosote is the enemy of chimneys and highly inflammable. It’s essential to get regular cleaning & servicing or you might get a visit from the local fire service. 🚒
