A little question for the horsey people...

We spend an awful lot of time talking about what we want to achieve with our horses.

The next competition.
Improving our dressage score.
Jumping bigger.
Getting fitter.
Overcoming nerves.
Learning something new.

But sometimes I think we forget to ask ourselves a rather important question...

What are you actually enjoying about your horses at the moment?

Not what you should be enjoying.
Not what you think you ought to be achieving.
Not what everyone else on social media seems to be doing.

What genuinely makes you smile?

Perhaps it's a quiet hack.

Perhaps it's finally getting that transition you've been working on.

Perhaps it's simply grooming your horse after a long day and feeling the world slow down for half an hour.

Perhaps, at the moment, you're just trying to get through a challenging patch of training and there isn't much enjoyment to be found.

And that's okay too.

Our horses are allowed to be part of our lives without always having to be a project.

So, I'm curious...

What is your favourite thing about having horses in your life right now?

I'd love to hear your answers.

I hear lots of people say ....

"What's this formation lark all about...it's just following....what's the skill in that"

If you think that well ...no no no no no.....you have no clue ...

Firstly it's a fun way to school your horse

Second it creates a great community

Third the timing and trimming

Fourth the accuracy

Fith the team work

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Life has been quite busy of late and when this happens I'm always a bit useless at keeping up with the Socials.

This doesn't mean I'm not out and about, I'm just busy.

Most of you will be aware that I have a bit of a glitch this autumn which really has put the bikosh on my autumn/winter training plans this side of the year.

BUT

I'm already planning for the New Year. With plenty of dates for :

POLES
EQBANDS
CONFIDENCE CLINICS
FORMATION
BHS TRAINING
ETC

While I'm incapacitated I have a plan.........

Watch this space.

EXAMS & COMPETITION — HOW DO WE REALLY TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY?

As riders and coaches, there are lots of ways we can measure what we know and what we are capable of.

Exams test our knowledge, understanding and ability to demonstrate that knowledge under assessment conditions.

Competition tests our ability to put our training into practice — often when the pressure is on, the adrenaline is flowing and things don't quite go according to plan!

Congratulations to Ava on recently passing her Pony Club D and D+ as well as bossing a super show jumping round on her wonderful pony Nibbs.

What we need to understand is whether you are doing exams or competitions, neither should be about simply collecting certificates, rosettes or results.

An exam should be about learning and developing your knowledge.

Competition should be about putting that knowledge into practice, learning from the experience and developing as a rider and horse partnership.

And sometimes the biggest test isn't whether you get the right answer or come home with a red ribbon.

It's how you deal with something going wrong or your nerves in the day.

Can you recognise what your horse needs?
Can you adapt your plan?
Can you stay calm and think?
Can you identify what you need to work on afterwards?

That's where real learning happens.

I also think it's important to remember that not everyone wants to take exams or compete — and that's absolutely fine. There are plenty of other ways to challenge yourself and measure your progress.

But whatever your goal, don't just ask "What have I achieved?"

Ask yourself:

👉 What do I know now that I didn't know before?
👉 What can I do now that I couldn't do before?
👉 And what have I learned from the things that didn't go to plan?

Because progress isn't always measured by a certificate or a rosette. Sometimes it's simply becoming a more knowledgeable, capable and thoughtful rider.

How do you like to test yourself — exams, competition, clinics, challenges, or simply seeing how far you can progress with your horse?

I want to know this as it helps me develop as a coach.

Although it's been quiet on the Socials it's been anything but quiet out in the arenas.

Here is a glimpse into team trainings and filming for the next competition.

It's been all go for the Poldice Pirates introducing 2 new riders to the team, with Strictly Come Prancing perfecting their canter duo and Tangerina Ballerinas gaining confidence.

If you fancy ago at formation riding, just for pleasure or would like to form a team, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming clinics.

Dates to be released SOON.

A little apology to all my lovely clients… 🙈

If I have been a bit slow organising things, replying, remembering something we discussed, or generally appearing as though my brain has gone on holiday without telling me… I apologise!

I have been absolutely run off my feet lately, which is also why social media has been rather quiet. Between teaching, travelling, organising, planning, admin and attempting to remember what day of the week it is, there hasn’t been much brain capacity left!

At the moment, my brain genuinely resembles a sieve. Important information goes in… and sometimes just falls straight back out again. 🤣

So if I have asked you something twice, forgotten something I said I would do, taken longer than usual to organise something, or replied to your message in my head but not actually on my phone… please know it is definitely not because I don’t care!

I am just having one of those periods where there seems to be far more going on than there are hours in the day.

Thank you for your patience with me. I promise I am doing my best, even if my organisational skills currently look like a horse attempting a dressage test without having seen the test first!

Normal service will resume… hopefully. Once I remember where I left my brain. 🤣
