New Experimental Rule 2026 – 2027 season

In the excitement of it being the start of our new season on Friday I forgot to mention about the below new experimental rule for this season. It’s something I have been thinking about introducing for a while now and would like to give it a trial run for a few weeks and see how things go.

Rule 6 –The ‘Tackle’ (Tag) and Tag Count
Any player worth 4 points or more will need to be tagged twice, by two separate defenders, before they are deemed to have been ‘tackled’.

However, this rule does not apply within seven meters (7m) of the opponents try-line where the normal one tag rule will still apply.

Note: It is only when a player in this category is tagged (‘tackled’) a second time that this tag will be added to the team’s Tag Count

No previous experience or membership required, just turn up with your kit and join in, open to anybody aged 16+. Cost £5/player.

TAG starts up again next Friday!

Just a quick reminder that our new TAG season starts next Friday 11th September 2026 , 6.45 for 7.00pm start, at our usual Autumn/Winter venue of Exeter Arena (EX4 8NT).

As per normal no previous experience or membership required, just turn up with your kit and join in, open to anybody aged 16+. Beginners are welcome. Cost £5/player.

The playing surface is grass but if boots are a problem for you, then not to worry as we can lend you a pair for the evening totally free of any charge.

This will be our 21st season!

Following the very sad news, Stef’s family and friends have shared that they warmly welcome anyone who would like to join them in celebrating his life on Friday 28 August. Please see the details below.

It is with very great sadness indeed that I must inform you that our much loved fellow TAG player Stef Archer has passed away. Stef has been coming to our Friday TAG evenings for well over a decade and was not only a great player ( he recently represented Poland in Rugby League) but also a great, and very well loved personality. I shall always remember him as someone who always played in a positive and sporting spirit and brought his own unique blend of rugby and humour to our evenings. I know I speak for all who knew him that he shall be very much missed and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Just a quick message to say our TAG Season (our 21st) kicks off again on Friday 11th September 2026 at the Exeter Arena 7 – 9.00pm.

If you can’t wait to then, then don’t forget Dylan is a TAG session every Wednesday evening at the Recreation Field, Village Road, Christow EX6 7NG.

Awards & last night’s TAG – Great evening to finish off our TAG season last night and though we didn’t quite hit the dizzy heights of our hottest temperature we have ever played in (30.5℃ in June 2022) 29℃ was certainly warm enough.
This heat seemed to have a real positive impact on our more senior players where the likes of Paul G,, Nigel J, Colin E., Dave U, Ken L. & Richard V. all appeared to be moving with such freedom, grace & speed ……. bit like one of Nigel’s classic cars once the engine oil had warmed up!

Many a good try scored last night but the one that shall for ever live in my memory was Colin’s grubber kick through a tight knit defense to score a most brilliant individual try --- Dovey, watch out!

2025 – 2026 TAG Rugby Awards which were presented last night went to the following:

Top Attendee (we had 25 sessions in total this season)
Male; Lewis U. – 24
Female; Emma B. – 15

Most Improved Player of the Year Award went to Olli S. for a record, 2nd year in a row! At this rate he will be playing for England in 5 years’ time!

Spirit of TAG Rugby Award went to a very well-deserved Emma B.

Congratulations to all of them and hope you all have a very good summer and I look forward to seeing you in September back at the Arena for the start of what will be our 21st Season.

PS Don’t forget there is the Christow TAG that Dylan S. runs happening every Wednesday evening throughout the summer.

To my knowledge there are no local heat warnings in place for today so TAG is ON TONIGHT (26th June).

Exeter Athletic Rugby Club (EX5 1AF) 6.30pm start. Please come suitably equipped.

Last session of the season. Bar will be open after.
