🥋 WELCOME TO THE EMA TEAM, COSTIN!

Some martial arts journeys take you around the world…

Costin started his Traditional Jiu Jitsu journey with our Seishin Mizu Ryu club in Leicester and progressed to Shodan Black Belt.

After completing his Master's degree, he moved to the British Virgin Islands for work.

Now he's back in the UK and has joined us at Exeter Martial Arts.

But he's not just here to train.

He's here to learn.

Learn how to teach.
Learn how to coach.
Learn how to develop students.
Learn how to run a martial arts academy.

Because at EMA, we believe a black belt isn't the end of the journey.

It's the beginning of a new one.

Welcome back to the Seishin Mizu Ryu family, Costin. 👊

You don't have to be ready to start.

One of our members, Jonny, recently left us a review after training at Exeter Martial Arts for a year.

What he wrote really struck us.

Before his first class, he remembers walking towards the gym thinking:

"I'm too unfit to do this."

"Everyone's going to think I'm too old."

"I should just turn around and go home."

But he took that first step through the door.

Over the next year, something pretty amazing happened.

He lost over 3 stone.

But more importantly, he gained confidence, self-belief and a group of people he enjoyed training with.

And that's something we see again and again.

People don't walk through our doors because they're already confident, fit and experienced.

They come because they want to become those things.

So if you've been thinking about trying martial arts but you've been telling yourself:

❌ I'm too old
❌ I'm too unfit
❌ I'm not flexible enough
❌ I don't know anyone
❌ Everyone else will be better than me

Remember Jonny's story.

The hardest part is often just walking through the door.

We'll help with the rest.

🌿 Tai Chi at Exeter Martial Arts

There’s something special about finishing a Tai Chi class with a smile. 😊

Our Tai Chi sessions with Sifu Damien combine gentle movement, balance, coordination and mindful practice helping to work both the body and the mind.

But it’s not all about the exercise. It’s also about meeting people, learning something new and enjoying the journey together.

A great session, great company and three very happy members! 👊🌿

If you’ve never tried Tai Chi before, you don’t need any previous experience or special level of fitness to get started.

🥋 5 Rules for Success , On the Mat and in Life

Every week I have countless conversations with people as I teach and coach. One thing I’ve noticed is that many people are struggling with confidence, motivation, stress, direction, or simply feeling stuck.

It got me thinking…

The lessons we learn through martial arts aren’t just about fighting. They’re about how we approach life.

So I put together these 5 simple rules for success. They’ve helped me, my students and many others along the way and they apply just as much outside the dojo as they do inside it.

You don’t have to master them all at once.

Just pick one. Work on it. Keep showing up. Keep moving forward.

Hopefully, someone who needs to hear this today finds it useful. 🙏

🥋 Train hard. Live well. Keep moving forward.

Strength isn’t about size it’s about skill, timing, and technique.

Check out Teni drilling the throw morote seoi nage counter to a double hook punch, showing how traditional Jiu Jitsu enables someone to use leverage, balance, and precision to overcome a stronger attacker.

This is a great example of why self-defence training is so valuable. It’s not about who is bigger or stronger it’s about developing the skills, awareness, and confidence to protect yourself when it matters most.

Train with purpose. Stay calm under pressure. Build confidence through technique.

🥋 Traditional Jiu Jitsu
💪 Technique over strength
🛡️ Practical self-defence

Some moments in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mean so much more than the colour of a belt. They represent the tough rounds, the setbacks, the victories, and the decision to keep showing up even when it wasn’t easy.

This week, we’re incredibly proud to celebrate Dylan and Jordan on their well-earned promotions at Exeter Martial Arts with the Sidney Silva BJJ Association. 🥋💜💙

After five years of dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment, Dylan has earned his purple belt. Every training session, every challenge overcome, and every lesson learned has led to this moment. Purple belt is a testament to the work you’ve put in and the martial artist you’ve become.

Jordan has earned his blue belt after a fantastic belt test, marking a huge milestone in his BJJ journey. Blue belt isn’t just a new colour, it’s proof that consistency, courage, and determination always pay off.

Neither promotion came by chance. Both belts were earned through hard work, perseverance, humility, and the willingness to keep learning every time they stepped onto the mats.

We’re honoured to share this journey with you both and can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes you. Keep growing, keep inspiring, and never stop learning.

Congratulations, Dylan and Jordan. Your BJJ family couldn’t be prouder. 💜💙🥋
