For more than 160 years, Edinburgh and St Andrews have gone head-to-head in one of Scotland’s oldest and most iconic sporting traditions. Here are three facts you might not know about the Scottish Varsity Match.

It all started in 1861.The Scottish Varsity Match is one of the oldest university sporting rivalries in the world. The first rugby match between the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews was played in 1861, beginning a traditin that has continued for more than 160 years.

It helped shape Scottish rugby. Long before professional rugby existed, the Varsity Match was where many of Scotland’s best young players tested themselves. The fixture has produced generations of players who went on to represent Scotland internationally, making it an important part of the country’s rugby history.

It’s about far more than one match. What began as a single rugby fixture has evolved into a celebration of university sport, bringing together students, alumni and supporters from Scotland’s two oldest universities. Today, the rivalry extends across multiple sports while preserving traditions that date back more than a century.
