In the interview Billy eloquently describes the mood in the arena when the news broke of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. In his familiar tones he speaks to the BBC’s Maz Farookhi about the Lord Mayor, Councillor Maureen Cornish’s speech, given at the University of Birmingham’s Sport and Fitness Arena only minutes after the formal announcement. He also talks in length about the championships, karate around the Commonwealth, its inclusivity, and future aspirations.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our utmost gratitude to our volunteers, who have been working tirelessly and for long hours each day, from the very beginning: planning, organising, setting up, running the tournament… you name it. Many of them have full-time jobs and still, sacrifice their time for this event.
Also not forget the University of Birmingham Karate Team, who are the backbone of the volunteering team, working closely with the organisers, at least 12 hours each day since Monday.
It is their passion and selfless act which enables the championships to happen. Let us give all the volunteers a big hand.
